MERICA DEATH
John D. Merica, Former Deputy Sheriff, Dies from Double Pneumonia
One Week's Illness
Wife, Mother and Children Survive
Funeral at 10 O'clock Wednesday.
John D. Merica, formerly a deputy sheriff of this county under Thomas Durkins, and well
known, died at five o'clock last night from double pneumonia after a weeks illness.
He was fifty-six years, four months and twenty-eight days old at the time of his death.
His death occurred at his home on High street in the south part of the city.
He was the son of Noah and Armis (sic) Merica and was born in Jackson county, Ohio,
August 9, 1860. He was married for the first time in 1877 to Anna Spangler of this
county, and three children were born to this union, two of whom are dead and Maud Conrad
of Circleville, Ohio surviving.
His second marriage was in 1900 two years after the death of the first wife, to Dora A.
Lewis, who survives. His mother also survives him, having made her home with him for
several years. Two children to the second marriage, Gladys and Glennys survive. One
brother, Homer Merica of Muncie and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Yaney, Seling, Ohio; Ada
Baxter, Decatur; Mrs. Mary Fisher, Decatur; also survive. Of step children Curtis Wolf,
Dollie McKinnon, Grace Dutcher and Harvey Lewis survive.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at ten o'clock from the Baptist
church, Rev. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur cemetery.
