MRS. AVON BURK DIES AT HOSPITAL TODAY
Well Known Decatur Woman Dies Today
Mrs. Avon Burk, 62, prominently identified with the civic and social life of Decatur
and for 25 years, organist at the First Methodist Church, died at 8:15 a.m. today at the
Adams County Memorial Hospital, following several years illness.
A hospital patient for the past two weeks, Mrs. Burk had been in an oxygen tent most of
the time. Her death came unexpectedly this morning.
A lifelong resident of this city, Mrs. Burk was a daughter of Decatur's first
mayor. Born Aug 19, 1888, she was a daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. J. T. Merryman
and resided in the former Merryman home, corner of Marshall and Second streets.
A graduate of Decatur high school, Mrs. Burk attended the University of Wisconsin,
DePauw University and completed her musical studies at the Conservatory of Music,
Cincinnati. Her musical talents found outlet as organist to her church and pianist in
local musical recitals.
She was married to Avon Burk, now head of Burk Elevators located in this city and
county, on Oct. 23, 1912.
Mrs. Burk was a charter member of Tri Kappa sorority, a member of W. S. C. S. of the
Methodist church and recently had been made a 25-year honorary member of the Decatur
Woman's club. She was affiliated with the Music Department of the club. At DePauw
University she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Besides her husband, survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Walter Trask of Bloomington and a
son, Dr. James M. Burk of this city. A brother, C. A. Merryman of Collinston, La., and a
sister, Mrs. Don Quinn of Oak Park, Ill., also survive. A brother, Robert, and a sister,
Iona, are deceased.
The body will remain at the Zwick funeral home and funeral arrangements will not be
made until this evening.
