JAY W. CHAPMAN, 93, DIES SUNDAY NIGHT
Jay W. Chapman, 93-year-old retired farmer of St. Mary's township, died at 11:10
o'clock Sunday night at his home, five miles west of Decatur. He had been bedfast for
the past two weeks.
He was born in Decatur July 13, 1870, a son of Aaron and Deborah Purden-Chapman. He
was first married Sept. 25, 1891 to May Phipps, who died Jan. 25, 1907. He was then
married to Eda (?sic) J. Simons, Nov. 28 1909.
Mr. Chapman was a member of the First Methodist Church of Decatur and the St.
Mary's Farm Bureau.
Surviving in addition to his wife are five daughers, Mrs. Vernon (Ruth) Horn of Ft.
Wayne; Mrs. Helen Chapman of Ca?ino, Calif., Mrs. Arlo (Bertha) Severence of
Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Goldie Carman of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Jack (Katherine) McCormick
of Kennewick, Wash.; three sons, Herman Chapman of Los Angeles, Calif., Kenneth Chapman of
Columbia City, and Ward Chapman of Decatur route 3; 26 grandchildren; 48
great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Two daughters, three sons and
eight brothers and sisters are deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Zwick funeral home with the
Rev. A. C. Underwood officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur cemetery. Friends may
call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Tuesday until time of the services.
