Mary J. Strickler, 89, 1145 Mercer Ave., a retired Adams County Welfare Department
caseworker, died at 6:20 a.m. Sunday in Decatur Community Care Center, following an
extended illness.
She was a member of Decatur Church of God. Born in Jacksonville [Morgan], Ill., on
Aug. 30, 1897, she was the daughter of Thomas and Alice Newton-Titus, and was first
married in 1918 to George N. Hazelwood; he died in 1950. She later married James J.
Strickler in 1959; he died in 1964.
Survivors include one son, Joe Hazelwood, route 7, Fort Wayne; three daughters, Mrs.
Paul (Norma) Moore, route 1, Decatur; Mrs. Carl (Helen) Pancake, Fort Wayne; Mrs. LeRoy
(Georgia) Bertke, Ft. Recovery, O.; a stepson, Harold Strickler, Decatur; eight
grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Cleta Schaadt, three sisters,
one brother, and three grandchildren preceded in death.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Winteregg-Linn & Haggard Funeral Home,
Rev. Kenneth J. Mishler officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur Cemetery. Friends may
call at the funeral home from 2-9 p.m. today. Memorials are to the Decatur Church of
God.
