ANSWERED CALL
J. D. Bollinger Died Early This Morning After Extended Illness.
Stroke of Paralysis Friday Night Direct Cause of Death -- Well Known Mason Contractor
John D. Bollinger, aged sixty years, and for the past forty years a resident of this
city, passed away at his home on N. Fifth street, at five o'clock this morning, death
having resulted from a slight stroke of paralysis suffered by him on last Friday evening.
Mr. Bollinger had been in ill health for the past several years from diabetes and Brights
disease and for the past seven or eight weeks had been confined to his home. His
condition rapidly became worse until he was seized with the stroke Friday evening which
effected his left side, and from that time practically all hope had been given up for his
recovery. Mr. Bollinger was one of the prominent business men of the city, having for
years been a contracting mason. He was a member of the Methodist church and also of the
order of Odd Fellows and his death is the cause of deep regret among all who were
acquainted with him.
The deceased was born at Defiance, Ohio, November 14, 1861, and was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Peter Bollinger. The family moved to Columbia City when Mr. Bollinger was a very
young man, and shortly afterward he came to this city where he has made his home since.
Mr. Bollinger was twice united in marriage, the first union having occurred on July 8,
1892. Three years later however the wife died and on September 12, 1896 he was united in
marriage to Mrs. Ella Strait of this city. Surviving besides the wife are one son, Peter
Bollinger of this city, and two stepsons, Alva and John Strait of Middleton, Ohio. Two
children by the second marriage and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Flossie Baker, have preceded
the father in death. Four brothers and two sisters also survive, they being Frank of
California, Eli of Columbia City, Amos of Nile, Mich., Albert of LaOtto, Ind., Mrs. G. M.
Coplen of Goodland, Kans., and Mrs. W. H. Meyers of this city.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist
church, Rev. Tinkham officiating. Interment will be made in the Decatur cemetery.
