A. C. BUTCHER DIES SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Funeral Services Tuesday Afternoon
Adam Clark Butcher, 76, well known attorney, a former justice of the peace in
Washington township and actively identified with Democratic politics for 25 years, died
Saturday afternoon at his home, 224 North Eleventh street, of carcinoma.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Gillig and
Doan funeral home and at 2 o'clock at the Untied Brethren church, with Rev. R. R.
Wilson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur cemetery.
Mr. Butcher was born in Jay county, on Oct. 17, 1868 and came to this county when a
young man. He lived in Decatur for 60 years.
He was elected justice of the peace several times and entered the Democratic primaries
as a candidate for judge of the Adams Circuit court, prosecuting attorney and mayor of
Decatur. He took an active interest in politics and government. In his youth he served
as a school teacher.
Mr. Butcher also conducted an insurance agency in connection with his law office.
Mr. Butcher married Eldora Jane Johnson in June 1893, who died in April, 1936. In 1937
he married Mary Alma Butcher, who survives.
The surviving children are: Mrs. F. O. Baker, Mrs. Evaline Butcher and Mrs. H. F.
Gilpin of this city; Morris Butcher of Wapakoneta, O.; Lewis and Robert Butcher of Decatur
and Maynard Butcher of Denver, Colo.
One brother, Henry Butcher of Celina, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Willis Baits of Bryant,
also survive. Twenty grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive.
The body may be viewed at the Gillig and Doan funeral home until time for the
services.
