MET DEATH IN ACCIDENT
Mr. Lewis Sickafoos, Well Known Here, Killed While at Work at Whiting, Ind.
Steel Fell On Body
Married Minnie Reynolds in This City - Moved to Laketon Ten Years Ago
Word reached this city last evening of the death yesterday morning at Whiting [Lake
Co], Ind., of Lewis Sickafoos, well known here, and who married Miss Minnie Reynolds,
daughter of Jack Reynolds.
Mr. Sickafoos was an employe of the Indiana Pipe Line company, and while assisting a
fellow employe, Mr. Berry, in re-roofing a building belong to the company at Whiting, both
men lost their lives Tuesday. They were engaged in hoisting sheet steel to the roof with
block and tackle. Eleven pieces of the steel were being hoisted, and Mr. Sickafoos was on
the ground, while Mr. Berry was on the roof. Berry was in the act of swinging the steel
to the roof when the derrick gave away, allowing the steel and derrick to fall. The heavy
steel fell directly upon Mr. Sickafoos, and Mr. Berry landed on top of the steel. Both
men were badly cut and bruised by the sharp edges of the steel. Sickafoos lived an hour
following the accident, which happened at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning. Berry survived
his injuries until 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Both men were well known among the
employes of the Indiana Pipe Line company at Preble, with whom they frequently worked.
The remains of the unfortunate men were taken to Laketon where funeral services will be
held. Mr. Sickafoos is survived by three sons and one daughter from his first marriage,
and the wife and one child by the second marriage. The daughter now makes her home with
the Irvin Hoffman family in Fort Wayne. Mr. Sickafoos located in Laketon after leaving
Decatur.
