DORA B. SHAFER
Dora B. Shafer, 91, Sebring, Florida, a native of Adams County and a teacher here and
in South Bend for more that 40 years, died Monday of Alzheimer's Disease.
She was born in 1899 in Blue Creek Township to Harvey O. and Laura A. Davis and married
Joseph R. Shafer in 1920. He is a resident of Sebring Care Center.
She was a member of the first graduating class at Pleasant Mills High School in 1918
and later graduated from Ball State Teacher's College in Muncie. She taught from
1919-20 in the Pleasant Mills school system and went on to teach the fourth grade in South
Bend for 40 years.
Following their retirements, Mr. and Mrs. Shafer lived in Decatur, then moved to
Florida. They were active charter members of the Presbyterian church in Avon Park,
Florida.
Other survivors include three sisters, Bessie D. Cowan, Willshire, Ohio; Madge C.
Masters, Bluffton; and Midge Ripley, Berne; a brother, William L. Davis, Richmond; and
many nephews, nieces. Two brothers, Richard F. Davis and J. Purl Davis are deceased.
Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fountain Funeral Home, Avon Park, with
burial in Avon Park. Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Friday. Preferred memorials are to the
Avon Park Presbyterian church's building fund.
