Tanya D. Smith, 40, Woodburn, a native of Decatur, died at 4:05 p.m. Saturday in St.
Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne, after being in ill health for 1 1/4 years.
She was born in Decatur on September 23, 1949, to Ivan Garwood, Sr. and his wife,
Lucille Schaffer Garwood, who resided in Fort Wayne. She married Michael E. Smith on
December 14, 1973 and he also surives.
She worked at the Columbia City Magnavox plant the past four years, was a member of
Woodburn United Methodist Church, and was very active in raising funds for Benet Learning
Center. She was a 1967 graduate of Monmouth High School.
Other survivors are two sons, Aaron M. and Joshua D. Smith, at home; five sister, Mrs.
Donald (Barbara) Waidelich, Mrs. Bill (Leah) Borror, and Mrs. Robertson (Connie) Goll, all
of Fort Wayne; Mrs. Larry (Judy) Burkhart, Avila; and Mrs. Archibald (Karen) Cornell,
Springfield, Ohio; and six brothers, Ivan Garwood, Jr., and Thomas, James and Terry
Garwood all of Fort Wayne; William Garwood, Woodburn; and Timothy Garwood, Ossian. One
brother, Danny Garwood is deceased.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday in Woodburn United Methodist Church. Burial
will be in Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Pallbearers are Duane Romine, Dean Garwood,
Derek Garwood, Tony Garwood, Brian Cornell, Jeff Burkhart, Craig Collins and Troy
Waidelich.
Visiting hours at Zwick-Sefton and Jahn Funeal Home are 6 yo 9 today and 2 to 5 and 6
to 9 Wednesday. There will be visitiation from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the church.
Preferred memorials are to Benet Learning Center or St. Joseph Medical Center's
Oncology Department.
