Richard Hendricks, Expert on Speech, University of Maryland Professor
Richard Hendricks, 53 a speech professor and division head at the University of Maryland,
died in Leland Hospital Sunday after a brief illness. He lived at 6700 Bellcrest Road
Hyattsville.
A native of Monroe, Indiana he received a bachelor's degree in speech from Franklin
College in Indiana in 1937, a master's in speech from Ohio State University two years
later and his Ph.D. in speech in 1956 from Ohio State.
Dr. Hendricks became an admissions counselor at Grinnell College, Iowa in 1939, and served
as a sergeant with the Army Engineers from 1942 to 1945. Dr. Hendricks was awarded the
Bronze Star for his contributions during the Ryukus operation and the Battle of Okinawa
during WWII.
He came to the University of Maryland in 1946 as a speech instructor and was an assistant
professor of speech from 1949-1956, serving part of that time as speech pathologist at the
university's School of Medicine in Baltimore. Since 1956 he had been director of the
university's Speech and Hearing Science Division.
Dr. Hendricks also was a consultant in speech pathology for health departments and school
boards in seven Maryland counties. Since 1966 he had served as a consultant to the Sinai
Hospital in Baltimore.
The author of several pamphlets and numerous journal articles in his field, Dr. Hendricks
worked on a color sound film in 1960 for the Electronic Teaching Laboratories entitled
"The Next Voice You Hear."
Among his national activities, he presented papers and served as panelist before annual
conventions of the Speech Association of America and Hearing Association. In 1963 he
represented the university at a national seminar in Washington on graduate training in
speech pathology and audiology.
Dr. Hendricks was a member of the committee on Head Start programs for the American Speech
and Hearing Association. He was a member of Americans for the Advancement of Science, the
American Association of University Professors, the Institute of General Semantics and the
National Association of Rehabilitation.
Besides his wife, Elizabeth, he leaves a son, Benjamin, a student at the University of
Maryland; a daughter, Mrs. Stephanie Parreco of Gambrills, Md.: two sisters, Mrs. Louise
Nye of Indianapolis and Mrs. Mareem Horn of Evansville, Indiana, and one grandson. He was
preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Anna Smith Hendricks.
A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the West Chapel on the university
campus, College Park.
The family request that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the
Scholarship Fund, Office of Gifts and Endowments, North Administration Building,
University of Maryland College Park.
