MRS. HOSEA RAY SUCCUMBS LAST NIGHT AT MONROE
Funeral Sunday for Former Berne Resident, Native of This
Community
Mrs. Nellie Smith Ray, 65, wife of Hosea Ray of Monroe, formerly of Berne, died
at 7:15 o'clock Thursday evening at her home in Monroe. Death was caused by paralysis
from which Mrs. Ray had suffered for ten years. She had been bedfast on and off for a
long time.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray moved to Monroe some time ago from Berne. They lived in an
apartment in Berne for several years.
Mrs. Ray was born in this community March 21, 1881, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Barclay Smith and spent her entire life in this vicinity except for the years in Randolph
county. She was married to Hosea Ray May, 28, 1903.
The husband survives and the following brothers and sisters; Ransom Smith,
Frankfort; Harl Smith, Decatur, formerly of Berne; Clinton Smith, Cadillac, Michigan and
Roxie, Fort Wayne. Three sisters preceded in death, Mrs. Lou Ray, Mrs. Stella Merriman
and Etta.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Friends church in
Monroe, following a short service at the home. The Rev. Bragg of Decatur will officiate,
assisted by Rev. Robert Miller of Monroe. Burial will be in the M. R. E. cemetery west of
Berne. The body will be taken to the home this evening from the Lobenstein funeral home
in Monroe.
