SAM MESHBERGER FUNERAL TODAY
Well Known Berne Man Dies Saturday from Blood Poisoning
Sam Meshberger, 75, well known Berne man died at the home of his daughter, Mrs.
Elsie Sparling at Moweaqua, Ill., Saturday morning at 6:00 o'clock. Death was
attributed to blood poisoning caused from a splinter that had entered his foot and that
had become infected.
Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite church this morning at 10
o'clock and were conducted by Rev. C. H. Suckau, pastor of the church. Burial was
made at the M. R. E. cemetery.
Mr. Meshberger was born Aug. 15, 1857, the son of Jacob and Rosina Reffe
Meshberger. His birth took place in French township. His exact age at the time of death
was 75 years, five months and 13 days.
He was married to Alberta Huffman who died in 1896. They farmed in French
township. About forty years ago Mr. Meshberger moved to Berne and served as a teamster
for the P. W. Smith saw mill. Later in his career he served as Berne's street
sprinkler and street cleaner in which he took considerable pride. His home was on the
West Main St.
Two children survive. They are Mrs. Elsie Sparling, Moweaqua, Ill., and Earl at
Detroit. Three brothers survive. They are John and Ben of Linn Grove and Jacob of
Elreno, Oklahoma.
One child died in infancy. Brothers and sisters who preceded are Abe, Maddie
Rohn, David, all of Linn Grove, Fred of Ft. Wayne, Christina Bierie, Mary Dunbar of Linn
Grove, Elizabeth and Sarah Gerber.
