MISS BERNETA REUSSER DIES EARLY TODAY
Popular Local High School Senior Passes Away at Hospital
While hundreds of relatives, friends and schoolmates were hoping for her recovery,
Berneta Elizabeth Reusser, 16, popular local young lady, died at the Adams Co. Memorial
Hospital at Decatur at 1:55 o'clock this morning. Her death came as a distinct shock
to her large group of friends and acquaintances.
Miss Reusser was well and active one week ago today. Last Thursday night she became
ill and on Sunday her condition became alarming. Doctors advised an operation as the
illness was diagnosed as appendicitis and the operation was performed last Sunday
afternoon.
Death was caused by peritonitis, following an operation for the removal of a gangrenous
appendix, her attending physician stated today. Her operation was a very difficult and
complicated one, and it was feared she might not recover. Tuesday her condition improved
slightly and hope was held for her recovery, but late Tuesday her temperature went up and
she became more restless. It was then that the peritonitis set in and hastened her
death.
The local doctors who performed the operation did everything known to medical science
to save her life. Wednesday evening when it was apparent that a second operation to allow
some of the peritonitis to drain was the only chance, a specialist was called from Fort
Wayne and the operation was performed about midnight. She never rallied and passed
peacefully away soon after. She was unconscious before the second operation was
performed.
Miss Reusser, while suffering much at times never complained and seemed reconciled to
the fact that she must die. Miss Ruth Stuckey, R. N. was at her bedside constantly. (Cut

Berneta Reusser was born in Berne on October 27, 1917, bringing her age to 16 years and
11 months. She was a daughter of Walter and Lillie Ehrsam Reusser. Berneta was a general
favorite with everybody, loved by all who knew her, including friends, schoolmates and
teachers. She was a Senior in the local high school this year and would have graduated in
the spring. Besides being a young lady of charming manners and a very pleasant
personality, she was a friend to everybody. In school she was one of the most popular and
talented students and will be sorely missed by schoolmates and teachers. She took part in
many school activities and was a member of the Budget staff.
During the past two summers she was employed (cut off)
