DAUGHTER OF CITY'S FOUNDER EXPIRED TODAY
Pneumonia Fatal To Mary Johnson, Daughter of Thomas Johnson
Lived With Sister - Father Donated Site For County Seat; Helped Plat The City
Mary Johnson, 57, daughter of Thomas Johnson, who was one of the founders of Decatur,
died at the home of her sister, Mrs. George Crist on Eleventh street, at 6:30 o'clock
Sunday evening. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia, although Miss Johnson had
suffered with goitre for some time. She was taken ill with pneumonia about a week ago.
Miss Johnson was born in Adams county, December 22, 1866. She was a daughter of Thomas
and Eliza Johnson. Her father and Samuel L. Rugg cut down the timber and laid off the
lots where the City of Decatur now stands; in the year 1836, more than eighty-seven years
ago. The population of Decatur at that time was about 166. Mr. Johnson donated the site
for the county seat here. He was one of the firm and energetic pioneers of this section
of the state.
Miss Johnson spent practically her entire life in Decatur and Adams county. She was a
member of the First Methodist church of Decatur and was a highly respected lady. Besides
her sister at whose home she died, Miss Johnson is survived by the following brothers and
sisters: Mrs. Charles Chaney, Plymouth, Indiana; Abner Johnson, Kansas City; Jacob
Johnson, Decatur; and Barton Johnson, Kansas City.
Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist church at two o'clock
Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. U. S. A. Bridge, pastor officiating. Short services will be
held at the Crist home on Eleventh street at 1:30 o'clock. Burial will be made in the
Maplewood cemetery.
