Hello Group
I will be visiting Adams Co Indiana for the first time to do
genealogical research for two days.
I would like the groups picks of places to visit for research.
Some time back someone talked about the basement in a sheriff's office.
Where is that?
Thanks Eric
Be sure to go to the library, court house( deeds, quick claim deeds),
sheriff's office, health department( birth certificates) and any cemeteries
that you find records of you family. Be sure to take a camera at pleanty of
picturess. I find that a plastic file box with folders works we for each
cemetery and a to do list. In the box be sure to have plenty of quarters
for the copy machine at the library, a small stapler, pencil and pens.
Small sticky notes are also helpful. While at the Adams County, take a trip
to Allen County Library, (you will be amazed as to how much they have), the
Berne Library branch( if you have Mennonite families), and the Library at
Walbash,IN also has a large genealogy section. I have stayed at the motel
in Decatur which has an indoor pool which is helpful after a long day also
they have tables in the entry way to sort out what you have found. Much
more comfortable than trying to do it in your motel room. Lynn Hilty Sewell

Yes, Eric the basement of the Sheriff's Law Enforcement Complex is a treasure trove of
records. Someone even took the time to compile a list of court records by surname which
was very helpful to me. It's a few blocks from the Library which you should also
visit. They have a small genealogy room that you will also find very helpful, as are the
librarians there. Also a block away is the Health Department and other county offices in
a converted school. All of the facilities are in Decatur, as is a historical society for
the county. I drove down to the historical society last year and the volunteer couple
that were there were very helpful. At that time, the society was only open on Sunday
afternoon. I believe the had a website or I got the info from the Decatur city website.
Good luck on your trip.
Barbara

Bee sure you go to the historical library in Berne. It's in the lower level of the
public library. I've been to all those places and they were very helpful for finding
materials.
