From Pat Lenhart:
Does anyone have other lists of Civil War units other than the ones posted
on the Adams Co, website or the ones in the Decatur Library?
I'm looking for William McDaniel and James McDaniel (brothers from Blue
Creek Twp). Their names are listed on the memorial on courthouse square in
Decatur. I cannot find them listed in the units posted above. I find
no further record of James McDaniel. William McDaniel died in a
conflict near Atlanta, Ga. Family legend says he was either captured and a
prisoner for a while and/or then died at Dallas, Ga, near Atlanta in Dec.
of 1864. William & wife, Mary Foreman were in Blackcreek Twp, Mercer
Co, Oh, near the Foreman families in the 1860 census. The McDaniel
homestead was in BlueCreek Twp, Adams Co, IN near the Ohio border.
There are about a dozen Wm. McDaniel's listed from both Ohio and Indiana in
the Civil War Index. The last name could have been listed as McDonald.
This was a common misinterpretation, but the McDaniel ancestors in Greene
Co, OH actually adopted McDonald sometime in the 1840's after this family
moved to Adams Co because they discovered their roots from the McDonald
clan in Ireland.
