Hi Everyone,
Many of you have visited or used the Query "Board" for Adams
Co. that I have set up using the GenConnect system. I've now
added three new "Boards" for your research help...Wills,
Deeds and Obituaries. They look and operate much like the
query boards, EXCEPT that they are read-only. To post your
material please send it to me and I will post it under your
name.
To assist me in that process, here are some guidelines:
1. Send the material you want to have posted to me in an email
message or attachment (I can convert most types of word
processor files). Be aware that special formatting, like tabs
or columns will not appear correctly when posted. In your message
include your name and email address, along with a list of surnames
relevant to the post (one surname per line, please), like the
following:
Tim Singleton
tsingleton(a)iclub.org
SINGLETON
MANN
KIESS
WARNER
MCCONNEHEY
Here would be the text of the deed, will, etc.
2. In regard to obituaries, I cannot post verbatim transcripts of
obits that fall under copyright protection, unless you can
provide express, written permission to do so from the copyright
holder. In general, anything published after 1924 (75 years ago)
should be considered to have copyright protection. Anything prior
to that date is generally OK.
If you have an obituary that is copyrighted, you can still abstract
the factual information for posting to the board...facts cannot be
copyrighted, but their presentation (in the form of an obit) can.
Thus, you can extract the individuals name, birth date and place,
death date and place, family members and relationships etc. and send
that information.
Deeds and wills are public documents and are not protected.
As always, if you're not sure, please ask.
3. Be sure to fully identify the source of the document in as much
detail as possible (e.g. "Decatur Daily Democrat, Saturday, March 2,
1907, p. 2, col. 3" or "Adams Co. Law Enforcement Center, Estate of
Joseph Mann, Box 178, File 192, Filed January 28, 1878").
4. Be patient. I'll get the material posted as soon as I can, but there
may be delays due to my job and other obligations. If you don't see
it posted within a week, send me another email message (not a repeat
of the posting) to make sure I got your original message.
5. Have fun and good luck in your research!
