Subject: Adams Co. - Preserving family and life stories

The CENTER FOR LIFE STORIES PRESERVATION has been on-line since 10/96
and while weve seen genealogy sites multiply by the thousands, there
still doesnt seem to be one clearinghouse of info for people on
preserving their stories - the oral history aspect of our families. So
were going to try to fill that void.
We started the CENTER after losing our 96-year-old grandfather (wed
traced his Luxembourg genealogy but never captured his fishing
stories!). We, too, are genealogists, but feel strongly about the
importance of individual family and life stories, and to that end, were
reaching out to the on-line community in search of additional links to
the following:
1. On-line memoirs - so far we have links to 175 sites (individual
stories, collections, community memoirs, military). Wed like to
provide links to any and all on-line memoirs
2. Oral history how-tos (interviewing, methods, tips)
3. Preserving the physical treasures (photos, newspaper clippings...)
4. Ways to preserve stories (audio, video, CD-rom, on-line, publishing,
etc.); were particularly looking for how-to sites rather than strictly
commercial sites.
5. Easy ways to preserve stories (whether youre 9 or 90), like starting
a family newsletter or other family traditions valuing day-to-day
stories
6. Nostalgia/memory triggering sites - old songs, the golden age of
radio and Hollywood, vintage cars, Flower Power, etc.
Note: Well be providing links to individual genealogical or historical
groups only if they have info of value dealing with preserving the
family stories. Our aim is not to be an all inclusive web-linker
(others do that far better), but to supply easy access to the best sites
we find - best either because they have so much to offer, or because
theyre powerful. The same with strictly commercial sites.
For those not familiar with us, we're a family organization (my family!)
who learned the hard way that if we don't take the time to get to know
our family members, their stories and experiences, NOW while theyre
still alive, and let them know us - sometimes we lose that chance.
We've seen how important it is to share and acknowledge ones experiences
and stories, (whether about military service, the Depression, working as
a farmer, raising a family, or just fun childhood memories), so our site
is set up as an ongoing/expanding resource of on-line help, ideas and
motivation, as well as links to many resources (military, genealogical,
historical). Weve been doing this since 1992, primarily in a teaching
role, and since 1996 have shifted our energies to the global community
via the internet.
If you run across any links that would be of interest, please, please
pass them our way. Of, if we can be of value to your members, please
pass along our URL:
