Max Noll Dies In Auto-Train Crash In West - Navy Veteran from Pleasant Mills Killed in
Accident
Max Andrew Noll, 27, a veteran of 10 years in the United States Navy, and son of Mr.
and Mrs. William Noll, of Pleasant Mills, was instantly killed Friday night when his auto
struck a high-speed Santa Fe streamliner near Tustin, Cal.
Noll, a chief machinist mate, stationed at the Santa Ana, Cal., naval air station,
was riding alone at the time of the fatal crash.
His car crashed into the second luggage car of the Los Angels-bound passenger train
and was dragged nearly a mile. One car of the train was derailed.
Noll enlisted in the navy air force Feb. 8, 1940, and following a tour of sea duty, he
had been assigned to shore duty, making his home at Santa Ana with hie wife, the former
Harriet Stetler of Willshire, O. and their two-year-old son, Max, Jr.
The navy veteran was born in Union township Sept. 28, 1921, a son of William and
Aletha Roop-Noll. He attended the Pleasant Mills high school and was a member of the
Pleasant Mills Baptist church. He was also a member of Adams Post 43, American Legion, of
this city. He was married in Mary of 1946.
Surviving in addition to his wife, son and parents; are three brothers, Lawrnece Noll
of Linn Grove, Gerald Noll of Antwerp, O., and Lowell Noll of Pleasant Mills, and nine
sisters, Mrs. Winston Rawley of Decatur, Mrs. Arney Anspaugh of Bryant, Miss Vivian Noll
and Mrs. Alvin Goddard, Jr., both of Rome, N. Y., Mrs. Claude Hemlinger and Mrs. Ned
Helsey (sic), both of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Warren Massoth, a twin of the victim, at East
Lansing, Mich., Mrs. Carl Johnson of Lafayette, and Miss Marilyn Noll, at home. One
brother, Robert, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Manley, are deceased.
The body will be brought to the Black funeral home in this city, with the time of
arrival not yet determined. Funeral services will be held at the Pleasant Mills Baptist
church, the Rev. R. H. Hammond of the Decatur Baptist church officiating. Burial will be
in the Decatur cemetery, with the Decatur and Willshire American Legion posts conduction
military rites. Definite time of the funeral will be announced after arrival of the
body.
