My great-grandfather was Edward Wilson Hower, b. July
4, 1989 somewhere in Indiana. His family lived in the
Decatur area, but when I was down there last Spring,
his birth certificate was not found in the Adams
county records. But I know he lived in Decatur
because he was listed in the 1900 census living with
his family (Alva Curtis Hower and Viola Barnett, and
older sister Ruth), and in the 1910 census living with
a Tumbleson family.
Anyway, the point of my posting is that I need help
locating any records of my great-grandfather's service
in WWI. I believe that he enlisted in Indiana, but
I'm not sure where to start my search. I have also
had no luck so far finding him in any WWI draft cards.
What I do know is that by the age of 19 or 20 he was
medically discharged after a mustard gas accident that
allegedly killed 28 of the 30 men during a training
exercise, but I am uncertain where he was based. He
somehow ended up in Minneapolis where he met my
great-grandmother who worked for the Fort Snelling VA.
I am planning to return to the Decatur area next
summer and I'd love to have some leads to work on
while I'm there. Any help in this would be
appreciated!
