I am looking for any information on the following CARNALL family, including anyone related
to them in any way. (NOTE: see spelling variations for Carnall below.)
Henry Lawrence Carnall, [Sr.], b. ca.1818, Switzerland (in the French speaking area), came
to America between ca.1818 & 1850, settling SOMEWHERE in NY. I do NOT know if Henry
was already married when he came to America, or if he married Mary L. __?__ after arriving
here.
Mary L. (__?__) Carnall/Karnal-Meyer(s)/Myer(s)'s birthplace in the censuses have been
listed as France, New York, & Ohio. (NOTE: the censuses Mary is actually listed in
list her birthplace as follows: 1850=NY, 1860 & 1870=France.) Henry & Mary's
daughter Eliza was born SOMEWHERE in New York, ca. 1848. Then between ca. 1848 & 1850,
they moved & settled in Harrison Twp, Wells Co., IN. Henry died there between the 1850
& 1860 censuses, most likely between ca.1855 & 1860, & most likely in Wells
Co., IN, & is probably buried there. Mary L. (__?__) Carnall/Karnal-Meyer(s)/Myer(s)
d. between 1871-1880, in Washington Twp, Adams Co., IN, & is probably buried there.
Henry & Mary L. Carnal were listed in the Harrison Twp, Wells Co., IN Census on 2 Oct
1850, with 2 children: Eliza (2yrs, b. ca.1848) & Lawrence (7mos, b. ca.Feb 1850).
They had 2 other children after the 1850 census:
August Carnall (b.15 Aug 1851, Newville, Wells Co., IN)
Alfred Carnall (b. 30 Apr 1855, IN).
Henry Lawrence Carnall evidently died between the two censuses, because his wife Mary L.,
is listed in the 1860 Kirkland, Adams Co., IN, married by then to a Christopher Frederick
Meyers.
NOTE: a Mary L. (__?__) Karnal m. Christopher Frederick Meyers of Washington Twp, Adams
Co., IN......I don't know the marriage date or place.
The 1860 Wells Co., IN Census shows that 2 of the Carnall children (Henry Lawrence Jr.
& August) have been farmed out (to relatives, friends, or neighbors ???), most likely
Mary probably couldn't take care of them financially without their father. I have no
idea what happened to Eliza, the oldest Carnall child.
A little more info on Henry & Mary L. (__?__) Carnall, [Sr.]'s children:
1.) Eliza Carnall--b. ca 1848, NY. (Did she die young in Wells Co., IN, or was she farmed
out to a family & ended up taking their surname?)
2.) Henry Lawrence Carnall, [Jr.]--b. 21 Feb 1850, IN; d. 7 Dec 1927, Bluffton, Wells Co.,
IN; m. (date unknown, prob. in Wells Co., IN.) to Melissa C. Higman (b. 15 Jan 1851, IN;
d. 14 Nov 1925, IN).
3.) August Carnall--b. 15 Aug 1851, Newville, Wells Co., IN; d. 5 June 1935, Walnut,
Crawford Co., KS; m. 28 Feb 1884, Crawford Co., KS to Lucretia Mabel Michael (b. 30 Mar
1862, Carroll Co., IN; d. 20/21 Dec 1918, Crawford Co., KS).
4.) Alfred Carnall--b. 30 Apr 1855, IN; d. before 5 Jan 1938, Bluffton, Wells Co., IN; m.
(date unknown, prob. in IL) Mary A. Cossairt (b. ca.1856, MO). In 1880 Census they are in
Woodland, Fulton Co., IL, with 2 daughters ages 2yrs & 8mos, both born in IL, &
they're living next door to whom I believe to be Mary Cossairt's parents.
I have found our particular CARNALL surname to be spelled in the following ways:
CARNAL(L)
CARNEL(L)
CORNAL(L)
CORNEL(L)
KARNAL(L)
KANNAL(L)
KANAL(L)
KENAUGHT
Thank you so much for any help anyone can give me,
Donna Tice-Carnall
