Obituary: Dies At Age of 95 Years
Mrs. Martha D. Johnston, County's Oldest Resident, Dies at Monroe
Mrs. Martha Dyarman Johnston, aged 94 years probably the oldest resident of Adams
county, died at her home in Monroe at 10:30 o'clock last night. Death was due to
senility. Mrs. Johnston having been bedfast for the last two years.
Mrs. Johnston was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Dyerman and was born in Cumberland
county, Pennsylvania, April 17, 1830. She came to Adams county with her parents* when she
was 28 [sic should be 22] years old, the family settling in Pleasant Mills. When she was
married to Johathan H. Andrews she moved to within two miles of Monroe and the remainder
of her life was spent in that immediate vicinity. Mrs. Johnston's first husband died
several yeas after their marriage and late she was married to Johathan C. Andrews a cousin
of her first husband. Her second husband died several years ago, she married a third time
this time to James Johnston who died in 1913. During the latter part of her life she and
her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Dulin, resided together in Monroe. Mrs. Johnston was well
known and held in high esteem. She was a member of the M. E. church.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by the following children: Hazel C. Andrews of DeWitt,
Ark., Anna Essex of Monroe, Thomas Johnston of Dunkirk, and Mrs. Dulin of Monroe. Also
the following step children: Mrs. Sam Haley of Portland, Mrs. Etta Hendricks of Monroe,
(Mrs.?) John Gross of Portland, and Mrs. Lew Williams of Decatur. Mrs. Catherine
Carpenter of Middlebury, OH is a half sister of the deceased.
Funeral services will be held from the M.E. church at 1:30 o'clock Monday
afternoon the pastor, Rev. S. I. Bechiel officiating. Burial will be made in the Ray
Cemetery west of Monroe.
*John Dyarman died in early 1830's and Elizabeth [Poundstone] Dyarman married Isaac
DeBolt and these are the "parents" mentioned in the obituary.
