Hi, all!
Polly was in my Smith line, so I am replying. Here's what I have on
Polly and her husband:
17578. Mary, or Polly Smith, born 25May 1804 Fayette Co., OH. She died
24March 1871 in Decatur, Adams County, Indiana She was married Sept. 2, 1873
in Fayette Co., OH to Eli Zimmerman, who was born March 19, 1802, at
Harper's Ferry, WV. He died Oct. 29, 1875 in Washington Twp., Adams Co., IN.
They moved to Adams Co., IN, Washington Twp. in 1834 and settled in an old
log house, purchased from a squatter, about half a mile south of David
Studabaker's. Although he could not read or write, he could cast interest and
drive a bargain; he bought government land, and kept adding, until at his
death he owned 900 adjacent acres, and 700 acres in Mercer Co, OH. As a young
man he had moved to Fayette Co., OH where two of his brothers were living.
When he first came to Adams Co., in 1834, he had to go to Fort Wayne to mill.
Sometimes he went with an ox team. It would take about three days to make the
trip. Sometimes one or more of the neighbors would go with him, and they
would go down the St. Mary's River in what he called a keel boat. He said it
was easy going down stream, but coming back it was hard work running up
stream. When he built his new house in1845, he had to go to Piqua, OH for his
hardware with an ox team. It would take five or six days to make the trip.
He also had to haul some of his lumber from Piqua, OH. He married (2) . When
he remarried he gave each of his children two hundred acres of land. It took
his son-in-law Washington Steele 16 years to settle his estate, but there was
no "lawing", Polly was a very industrious, frugal woman, and in early life a
regular attendant at church; but in later years she was crippled from a fall,
and could only walk short distances.
Polly was the daughter of Isaac Smith, granddaughter of Alexander and
Mary Davenport Smith, great-granddaughter of Rev. William Smith the
Younger, born 1716, lived in Holland, Berks Co., PA and loudon Co., VA;
great-great-granddaughter of Rev. William Smit the Elder (born 1684) of
Dortrecht, Holland; sailed from Rotterdam on the Loyal Judith, which arrived
in Philadelphia Nov. 25, 1740. He lived in Montgomery and Berks Counties, PA.
