Daniel Stucky Died Friday-Funeral Today
Well-known Retired Farmer is Victim of Stroke Suffered 2 Weeks Ago
Helped Organize Berne Lumber Co.
Daniel Stucky, aged 78, highly esteemed local retired farmer, died at his home at 509
Center street at 9:15 o'clock Friday evening. Death following a stroke of paralysis
which Mr. Stucky suffered while eating dinner two weeks ago today. His right side was
paralyzed and he was forced to bed. Mr. Stucky grew gradually weaker until death removed
him. Previous to the stroke, he had been in usual health.
Funeral Today
The funeral was held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2 o'clock
at the Mennonite church, of which Mr. Stucky was a faithful member. Burial was in the M.
R. E. Cemetery.
The deceased, a resident of Berne and community for 70 years, was born in Allen county,
near Leo, August 27, 1857, a son of Jacob and Barbara Gerig Stucky, both natives of
Germany. His parents moved to this community when the deceased was about 8 years old, and
settled here. On September 25, 1881, he was married to Miss Maryann Sprunger. The couple
celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary Sept. 25, 1931. They lived on a farm east of
town, where Ira Stucky now lives, for many years, and moved to Berne in 1919 after
retiring from the farm.
Mr. Stucky was a very successful farmer and was also interested in business ventures. He
was one of the organizers of the Berne Lumber Co., and since moving to Berne, he spent
much of his time at the Model Hatchery at Monroe, helping his son, Erwin.
Mr. Stucky was a member of the Mennonite Church, being baptized by the late Rev. S. F.
Sprunger. He was active in the church for many years and served on the board of trustees
and also as a Sunday School teacher.
Surviving to mourn his departure are his wife, a loving help-mate for more than half a
century, and the following sons and daughter: Otto, Walter, Florenz, Jacob, Ira, all of
the Berne community; Elmer, Syracuse; Erwin, Monroe; Martin, Willshire, O.; Howard,
Kokomo, and Mrs. Marcus Moser of Berne. One brother, Rev. D. C. Stucky of Detroit, and one
sister, Mrs. Peter Liechty of north of Berne, 38 grandchildren and great-grandchildren
also survive.
The parents, two sons, Asa and Eli, five sisters, one brother and one grandchild preceded
him. The brother was Jacob and the sisters were Mrs. Elias Hirschy, Barbara, Katie and two
who were both named Anna.
