Are you looking at Adams Co records? The little village, presently called
Salem, in Blue Creek Twp, on the Salem road used the name of Steele for its
post office from 1867 until a post office was discontinued there in 1904.
"Steele was chosen because there were too many other "Salems" to secure a
post office by the name of Salem....... It was named for "Doc" Steele, a
prominent farmer in Blue Creek Twp at the time........This information is in
the 1979 Adams Co History.

Subject: [INADAMS] Steele, Indiana
In extracting some marriage records from the early 1900's last
week, I came
upon a couple of references to Steele, Indiana. I cannot find such a town
in
my reference material. Does anyone know if that perhaps refers to the
area
near what we now know as Peterson, in Kirkland Twp.? I know the Steele
family had a milling operation there in the late 1800's.
Thanks...and I hope you've had a Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
