To the members of this list:
There has been a thread initiated by myself about the new location of the
Adams County web pages. My position is that they need to be moved back to
the RootsWeb server where they were, as we have determined that:
1) There was nothing wrong with the RootsWeb server for hosting the pages.
Nothing. No change in rootsweb policy, no demands for fees, no censorship
issues, nothing. The rootsweb server is very stable and 99.9% of the time
available to anyone accessing it. This is a major factor when looking for
host sites of public web pages.
2) Continuity with all the rest of the Indiana counties web pages address
and ease in finding them. All addresses are
www.rootsweb.com/~in [then add
the first 6 letters of the county name, or full name if less than 6 letters]
and you are at that counties web page.
3) There are NO advertisements at the rootsweb server. There are none of
those extremely annoying rapidly flashing banners to annoy you while you are
trying to work.
4) Every search engine known points to the rootsweb server as the location
of the Adams County web pages. It will take months for the search engines to
empty out their cached directories and re-index the site.
5) The Adams County web pages previously located at rootsweb should be
considered "public" pages, and not private pages owned by the current
host/hostess of the website. Therefore, since these pages should be
considered public pages, a host/hostess should not be allowed to wholesale
remove these public web pages from the server at their whim. This is the
equivalent of hijacking the web site. What if the host/hostess just got
tired of things, and took the entire web site down, making it completely
inaccessible. This is not what the position of webmaster for public pages is
meant to be. If these pages were private pages, developed (key word here),
setup and maintained by a private individual, then yes, they could do with
them what they will. However, I will state again, these are NOT private web
pages, these fall under public web pages, and should be treated as such.
I have received several (12 at last count) private emails from members of
this list who have also voiced concern about the moving of the Adams County
pages off the rootsweb server. Now it is time to make your concerns if you
have them public.
I submit we allow the voice of the majority decide if the Adams County web
pages truly are public pages and that they should be returned to the
rootsweb server where they logically belong. If you feel they need to
return, state that in a public email to this list. If you feel this is a
non-issue, and they can live anywhere a host/hostess decided, by all means
voice that as well in an email to this list.
Let the voice of the majority be heard.
