My grandmother and her sister were also in the Irene Byron Institute. In
the 1940's though. My grandmother wrote a lot of poems about the staff and
patients she met there and I have the book. If you think your person was
there in that time, I would be glad to look for you. There was also an
article in a Fort Wayne paper that I have here somewhere (can't find it at
the moment) and there was a woman listed who was doing major research on
the place. I wrote to the editor of that paper re: my grandmother, but
the woman unfortuneately had died right then. The editor told me she
would let me know if anyone picked up where the other woman had left off,
but I never heard from her again. I have many old photos of the place. At
first it was a TB center and then my grandmother ws there with polio.
Her name was Halcia (Stauffer) King. If you think I can help you with
those poems or by finding that article, I'll look harder.

(Found it... it was an Article on THE Irene Byron and how she became a
nurse and founded that hospital... there are staff mentioned and it's very
interesting if you would like a copy. A Gloria Goeglein was researching
the story since 1977 and had memorablia, including a sanatorium patient log
and she was the one who died. But I know there are still Goegleins in the
area and perhaps you could locate someone who has this info. The paper was
a small 'of interest' paper that was included in the news once a week.
This small section was called "People Northeast" dated March 12, 1996 and I
can't remember the name of the regular newspaper, but it's Fort Wayne's
major paper. )
