Benj. Pillars Expires Today - Civil War Veteran Dies at Home in This City; Wife Died
Recently
Benjamin Pillars, 80, civil war veteran and well-known citizen of Decatur, died at
this home, 103 South Seventh street, at 1 o'clock this afternoon, following an illness
of several weeks. Death was said to be due to infirmities. Mrs. Pillars preceded her
husband in death less than three weeks ago.
Benjamin Pillars was born in Adams country near Decatur, October 31, 1845. He spent
his early years in and near this city. He enlisted in the Eleventh Indiana Calvary,
Company C, at the opening of the Civil war and fought valiantly for the Union during the
war. At the close of the war, Mr. Pillars returned to this county.
In Jun, 1870, Mr. Pillars and Miss Mana Miller were united in marriage. To this
union, one child, Charles, was born. He preceded the father in death several years ago.
In April 1898, Mr. Pillars was married to Mrs. Mary J. McConnehey, who proceded the
husband in death less than three weeks ago.
Two sisters and two brothers also preceded Mr. Pillars in death. They were Samson
and William Pillars, Mrs. James Harkless and Mrs. J. A. Fonner.
Mr. Pillars was a member of the Decatur United Brethren church, and until his health
was impaired, he was a faithful member and earnest worker for his church. He was a member
of the G. A. R. for many years.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the United
Brethren church and burial will take place at the Decatur cemetery. The Rev. Cecil R.
Smith will have charge of the service.
