James R. Colter, 56, 419 Third St., a construction worker for the Indiana
Construction Co., died unexpectedly at 6:57 p.m. Tuesday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort
Wayne.
Mr. Colter, known as "Jim" to his friends, had suffered a heart attack on
Saturday, Jan. 24, at his residence, and was rushed to the Lutheran Hospital by the local
EMS unit. He was reportedly improving prior to being stricken Tuesday.
He was a member of the First United methodist Church, and the American Legion; he was
also a veteran of World War II.
Born in Decatur on Oct. 27, 1924, he was the son of Earl D. and Alma G.
Bowers-Colter, and was first married to Arline Roop on Nov. 20, 1951; she died June 10,
1964. He later married Elizabeth Olalde-Schrock, on March 10, 1973 and she survives. His
mother, of Decatur, also survives.
Also surviving are three children, Mrs. James (Sheryl) Anderson, Willingboro, N. J.;
Brett L. Colter, South Bend; Terry J. Colter, Decatur; three stepsons, Korben Schrock,
Steven Schrock, and Bradley Schrock, all of Decatur; one brother, Richard B. Colter, Rt.
2, Monroeville; and three grandchildren. One brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Winteregg-Linn &
Haggard Funeral Home, Rev. Philip W. Hillsamer officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur
Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday.
