FANNY HELLER SHIRK
Mrs. Fanny Heller Shirk, 84, Decatur native, stockholder of The Decatur Publishing Co., Inc., and former society editor, died about 1 p.m. Wednesday during surgery for an aneurism at St. Mary's Hospital, West Palm Beach, Florida.
Mrs. Shirk became ill on Sunday and her daughter, Mrs. Libby Nugent, stayed with her until early Wednesday morning when she became so ill she agreed to be hospitalized. Originally she had just suffered back pains that came and went. She was admitted to the hospital about 5:45 a.m. and taken to surgery about 8:30 a.m. About 12:30, halfway through surgery, she began to fail, and died about 1 p.m.
Mrs. Shirk, and her husband, John W. Shirk, moved to Jupiter from West Palm Beach, where they lived about 40 years, about three months ago when their apartment house was sold. Their new apartment was much nearer their daughter's home.
Her husband has been hospitalized since Tuesday and was to have minor surgery today, but this has been postponed. Mr. Shirk has suffered from heart problems for more than 40 years.
Fanny Elizabeth Heller was born in Decatur on December 23, 1900, the daughter of John H. and Martha Alice Peterson-Heller. She was graduated from Decatur High School and attended Indiana University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.
She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church.
On June 9, 1922, at the Heller home at 326 Winchester Street, she was married to Ishmael Wilford Macy, chief engineer of the Universal Conveyor Company, of South Bend. He formerly attended Purdue University, and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
The Macy's lived in South Bend, Galion, O., Columbus, O., Decatur and Indianapolis. Before her marriage, Fanny had served as society editor and had been a member of the Tri Kappa and the Decatur's Womans Club.
The Macy's had two daughters, Martha Alice who is deceased, and Mary Elizabeth (Libby).
On January 28, 1934, Ishmael died in his apartment at 3711 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis. He was then serving as an engineer for the Indiana Public Service Commission.
Mrs. Macy returned to Decatur, and served eight more years as society editor. At that time, the duties of society editor included all proofreading, and all circulation work, and answering of the telephone, as well as society editing.
On November 4, 1943, Mrs. Macy was married to John W. Shirk, a native of Tipton, and son of Robert L. and Louella Bouse-Shirk. Mr. Shirk had formerly lived in West Palm Beach and Miami, Fla., although he had been raised in Monroe. At the time of their marriage he was working for Patterson-Fletcher in Fort Wayne. He had once been a partner of the late Cal E. Peterson in the men's clothing business in Decatur, but a heart attack in the 1940's kept him from that business.
The Shirks moved back to West Palm Beach, Fla, where Mr. Shirk went into the real estate business, and was prominent in that field for many years. He has been retired for about a decade.
The Shirks were active socially in West Palm Beach, and played bridge for several decades. She was also a member of the West Palm Beach Garden Club. They were last in Decatur in 1961 for the funeral of Mrs. Shirk's mother, Mrs. John H. Heller.
Survivors in addition to the husband, include the daughter, Mrs. Jack (Libby) Nugent, of Jupiter, Fla.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The body has been taken to Quattlebaum-Holleman Burse Funeral Home, where friends may call Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, West Palm Beach, the Rev. Robert Backstrom officiating. Burial will follow in West Palm Beach.

My mother, Mildred Werling Germann, wrote the history of Preble for the 1979 History of Adams County. Here is an excerpt from it:
"Preble is located four miles west of Decatur and was called the oil town of the county. It received the name PREBLE from Commander Edward Preble who was a Revolutionary Marine Commander in the Mediterranean in 1803.
The town was laid out and platted Nov. 14, 1884 by David Werling and Daniel Hoffman. The original plat contained 13 lots, fifty by one hundred and fifty feet. Within the next three years David Werling laid out an addition to the town. Soon after this a saw mill and tile factory were started by David Werling and located on his farm...."
The story goes on for three columns of a full page. It appears the founding fathers of Preble were David Werling (my great grandfather) and Daniel Hoffman.
