QUADRIPLEGIC IS A SUICIDE VICTIM
A quadriplegic 45-year-old Linn Grove woman, Ina M. Wiles, committed suicide Saturday by drowning after she rolled her electric wheelchair into the Wabash River at Linn Grove.
Mrs. Wiles apparently entered the water around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, but her body was not found until almost 10:30 p.m.
The body, in water only six feet deep and just three feet from the bank, was recovered about a quarter mile north of the bridge in Linn Grove just after 11 p.m., according to a report from the Adams County Sheriff's Department.
Mrs. Wiles had lived in Linn Grove the past six years, staying with the Stan Patch family. Mrs. Wiles, who became paralyzed 12 years ago in a traffic accident in Kentucky, reportedly was despondent over her physical condition.
This morning, sheriff's department detective Kerry Uhrick said the investigation in continuing, but the authorities are certain the death was a suicide. No evidence of foul play turned up, he added.
The woman's wheelchair was also retrieved from the water.
Mrs. Wiles' body was found by Andy Eicher of route 3, Bluffton, who was walking along the riverbank with a flashlight looking for her. The Patch family became concerned when Mrs. Wiles disappeared, so a search was begun.
Assisting in the investigation and retrieval of the body were the sheriff's department, the coroner's office, state police, state conservation department and Berne Fire Department.
Mrs. Wiles was born in Anderson on July 10, 1941 to John and Anna Heath-Ent. He is deceased, but she still resides in Anderson. Other survivors include a daughter, Tina Wiles of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Timothy Wiles of Orlando, Florida and Terry Wiles of Tampa, Florida; three sisters, Barbara Stewart of Anderson and Wilma Windell and Patricia Baer, both of Markleville, Indiana; and a brother, John Ent of Muncie.
The body was removed to Winteregg-Linn & Haggard Funeral Home, but funeral arrangements, including the city in which the service will be held, are incomplete.
