MAURER FUNERAL ON SATURDAY
Mrs. Fred Maurer Died Suddenly Wednesday Morning
Wednesday at 9:15 o'clock occurred the unexpected and sudden death of Mrs. Anna Maria Maurer, aged 78, prominent local woman living on East Water St. Mrs. Maurer was stricken with apoplexy about 7 o'clock Wednesday morning, became unconscious immediately, and despite medical attention soon passed away.
The doctor called to her bedside Wednesday morning was the only time a doctor was called for her during her 78 years of life.
Mrs. Maurer was in good health until she suffered the stroke. She was around the house all day Tuesday and was working in the garden on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased was born in Canton Aargua, Switzerland, January 16, 1865, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Merz. She was married to Fred Maurer in Switzerland and came to America and Adams county in 1892. They resided on a farm in Wabash township, on old state road 27 south of Berne for many years, where Mr. Maurer died on May 3, 1918. Mrs. Maurer moved to Berne in 1929. She was a member of the local Reformed church and was an active church worker, being a Sunday School teacher for 35 years.
Surviving are the following children: Fred of Charbonneau, N. D., Miss Lena at home, Frieda, wife of Chris Lehman of Geneva, Ernest, and a grandchild, Ralph Miller, who was reared in her home. Two children died in infancy, and Mrs. Hedwig Miller, mother of Ralph preceded on August 14, 1904. No brothers or sisters survive, but 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren are living.
The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the house, and at 2 o'clock at the Reformed church, Rev. J. L. Conrad officiating.

HABEGGER RITES HELD SUNDAY
Mrs. Solomon Habegger, 71, Dies Here Sunday Noon
Funeral services for Mrs. Solomon Habegger, aged 71, who died at her home on West Main street here Friday just before 12 o'clock noon, were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Mennonite church. Interment was in the MRE Cemetery.
Mrs. Habegger, a prominent and widely known lady had been confined to her bed for several days, suffering from dropsy and complications. Cause of her death was attributed to hypostatic pneumonia and complications. She had ailed for the past year.
Mrs. Habegger was prominently known as a flower fancier and distributed flowers to the ill in the community at every opportunity.
Mrs. Habegger, formerly Caroline Reusser, was the daughter of Jacob and Catherine Sprunger Reusser and a twin sister of Mrs. C. C. (Rosina) Sprunger. They were born on the Gottschalk farm a short distance east of Berne on August 4, 1862. She was a lifelong resident of this community.
On April 15, 1883, she was married to Solomon Habegger to which union there were born nine children. They resided on a farm southeast of Berne, near Bunker hill until they moved to Berne on October 16, 1913. Their marriage vows were received by Rev. S. F. Sprunger, the year when Berne was incorporated.
Mr. Habegger preceded in death on October 17, 1933.
Mr. and Mrs. Habegger celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home on April 17, 1933, and entertained their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at a celebration of the event.
Children surviving are Rev. Edwin Habegger, pastor of the Evangelical church at Bippus, Mrs. Bessie Bracker of Berne, Mrs. David Neuhauser of Ridgeville Corners, O.; William of Berne; Mrs. Omer Neuenschwander of Berne and Mrs. Doyt McCrory at home.
Children preceding her were Mrs. Alina Burkholder and Jesse, a daughter, Zilla, who died in infancy and one grandchild, Joan Neuhauser.
Surviving brothers and sisters are her twin sister, Mrs. C. C. Sprunger, William Reusser, Dr. Amos Reusser, and Mrs. Fred Rohrer, all of Berne; Mrs. Emmet Orr of Rockford, Ill., and Henry Reusser of Berne
She was baptized at the Mennonite church on Christmas Day, 1879, with her twin sister by Rev. S. F. Sprunger, pastor of the church, and was a devoted member throughout her life.

MAX BENNETT
Max Bennett, 72, Haviland, Ohio, died unexpectedly Saturday in Paulding County, Ohio, Hospital, of a heart attack.
The native of Haviland, Ohio, married the former Pauline Cavinder in 1933; she died in 1961. He married Lois Jean Stephenson Lehman of Monroeville on August 15, 1964; she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, five daughters, four sisters, 29 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday (Ohio time)in Didrick-Taylor Funeral Home at Grover Hill, Ohio. Burial will be in Middle Creek Cemetery near Grover Hill. Visitation at the funeral home is today and on Tuesday until the service. Preferred memorials are gifts to either Haviland Baptist church or to recipients of the donor's choice.

Barbara Schwartz, three-day-old-daughter of Samuel A. and Rosie E. Schartz[sic]-Schwartz, route 1, Monroe, died at 5 a.m. Saturday in Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne.
The child had been born prematurely at home last Tuesday, and rushed to the hospital by EMS.
The parents are members of the Old Order Amish. Born at home on July 29, she is survived by the parents; five sisters, Fannie, Annie, Elizabeth, Salome and Emma, all at home; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe R. Schwartz, route 1, Monroe; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schwartz, route 2, Berne; and the paternal great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hilty, route 1, Berne.

Edwin E. Witte, 64, route 1, Decatur, part owner of Associated Tire, Fort Wayne, and active in the affairs of St. John Lutheran Church (Bingen), died at 4:22 p.m. Wednesday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he had been a patient for two weeks.
He had been associated with Associated Tire for 35 years and semi-tired for two years. He was a former trustee of the church, chairman of the Wyneken expansion, committee member of the cemetery expansion, and former chairman of the congregation. He was a member of the VFW in Fort Wayne and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy.
Born in Allen County on Nov. 20, 1921, he was the son of John and Esther Werling Gallmeyer-Witte, and was married December 28, 1952, to Betty L. Hockemeyer; she survives.
Also surviving are four children, Gene E., route 3, Decatur; Jan A., at home; Jay E., route 5, Decatur; Jeff M., Decatur; two half-sisters, Mrs. John (Ruth) Gresley, route 1, Decatur and Mrs. Wilmer (Marie) Hetherington, Englewood, O.; and one granddaughter, Holly Ann Witte. One half-sister, Mrs. Marie Kreigh, and one half-brother, Paul Gallmeyer, are deceased.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Zwick-Boltz & Jahn Funeral Home and at 2:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church (Bingen), Rev. Luther Russert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today and from 2-9 p.m. Friday. Memorials are to the church or the donor's choice.

Ronald Thornton, 71, of Decatur, died on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Ron was born on August 16, 1939 in Xenia, Ohio, to Edward and Maxine (Elliott) Thornton Sr.
He married Sharon L. Thompson on January 14, 1967.
Ron was a lifetime member of Moose Lodge 1311 in Decatur and a longtime volunteer for the Adams County Emergency Management Agency.
He was a forklift driver at Phelps Dodge in Fort Wayne for 34 years and retired in 2005.
Surviving is his wife, Sharon L. Thornton of Decatur; one son, Douglas C. (Stephanie) Thornton of Decatur; his special canine companion, "Cookie"; a brother, Jerry Wayne Thornton of Xenia; two sisters, Diana Charles of Xenia and Kay Cline of Daytona Beach, Florida; three grandchildren, Brittany (Richard) Parrish II, Gregory Thornton, and Cody Thornton, all of Decatur; and two great-grandchildren:Charles A. Lopez and Addison G. Parrish of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Thornton Jr.
Visitation is 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, February 14, 2011, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur and two hours prior to services.
A Moose service will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, in the funeral home, with Rev.

Sharon L. Thornton, 63, of Decatur, died on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at the nursing center in Woodcrest Retirement Community. She was born on January 11, 1948, in Greenville, Ohio, to Charles and Doris (Kemp) Thompson.
On January 14, 1967, she married Ronald Thornton. He preceded her in death on February 9, 2011.
Sharon had worked for the Adams County Emergency Management Agency for many years.
She is survived by her mother, Doris Stivers of Xenia, Ohio; a son, Douglas C. Thornton (and wife Stephanie) of Decatur; a sister, Nancy Brooks of Xenia; three grandchildren, Mrs. Richard (Brittany) Parrish II, Gregory Thornton, and Cody Thornton, all of Decatur; and two great-grandchildren, Charles A. Lopez and Addison G. Parrish of Decatur.
She was also preceded in death by her father.
The funeral service will be on Friday, June 17, 2011. at 3 p.m., with calling from 1-3 p.m. at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home. Pastor Dan York will be officiating.
Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.
Memorials are to the Diabetes Fund within the Adams County Community Foundation.

Verl L. Snyder, 75, of 521 S. 13th St., died unexpectedly at 5:30 a.m. today at home of a heart attack.
He was born in Mercer County, Ohio, on May 31, 1912 to Benjamin and Merlie Rush-Snyder and married the former Almeda Cummings in May 1950; she died on January 17 this year. He was a retired employee of Gilpin Inc. of Decatur and a member of the Decatur Moose Lodge.
Surviving are two daughters, Pat and Janet (last names unknown) of Texas; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Benny (Jerry) Olalde of 133 Brookwood Dr. and Mrs. Jack (Sondra) Chilcote of 615 Cleveland St.; a brother, Lowell Snyder of Crestline, Ohio; five sisters, Bessie Falneke and Lena Cook of Celina, Ohio; Opal Huffman and Jessie Sapp of Rockford, Ohio; and Boneta Deitsch of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A son, stepson, (Clarence "Willy" May), two brothers and two sisters are deceased.

MARIE F. WYSS
Marie F. Wyss, 74, Hoagland, died at 10:04 a.m. Sunday at Lutheran Hospital.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hessen Cassel. Born in Allen County on May 18, 1913, she was the daughter of Louis R. and Josephine Bardy-Maldeney, and was married to Joseph R. Wyss; he survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Joseph N. Hoagland and Charles E. Hoagland; one daughter, Rosalind C. Golden, Hoagland; three brothers, Lawrence Maldeney, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Claude Maldeney, Fort Wayne, and Elmer Maldeney, Fort Wayne; one sister, Bertha Boyle, Fort Wayne; 18 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at Tom Mongovan Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, and 10 a.m. at the church. Friends may call today from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LUTHER F. BOYER
Luther F. Boyer, 62, of Fort Wayne, died on Wednesday in the Fort Wayne Veteran's Administration Medical Center. He was a native of Greenville, Ohio, but lived 30 years in Fort Wayne.
Surviving are his wife, Edna; a son; two step-daughters, including Suzette Koehlinger of Willshire, Ohio; two sisters and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were today in E. Harper and Son Funeral Home in New Haven, with burial in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials are gifts to the Allen County chapter of the American Cancer Society.

ROBERT E. GENT
Robert Earl Gent, 45, Convoy, O., died Wednesday evening in Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert, following an extended illness.
He was born December 21, 1941 in Middlesboro, Ky., a son of Howard and Evelyn Gilbert-Gent, and was married to Betty Vanover on June 30, 1962.
Survivors include the wife; two sons, Robnet Earl Jr. and Ricky Gene, both of Convoy; a daughter, Dawna Ulman of Decatur; one brother, Billy Fred Gent of Fort Wayne; six sisters, Dorothy Lovely, Richmond, Ky., Louise Mason, Detroit, Mich., Barbara Mayes, Fort Wayne, Phyllis Overbay, Angola, Linda Upton, Harrogate, Tenn., and Gail Ledford, Middlesboro, Ky.; one granddaughter and one step-granddaughter.
He was employed for 20 years at General Electric Co. in Fort Wayne and owned a party shop in Convoy. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Convoy.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. (Ohio time) Saturday in the church, Rev. Bud Walls officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. (Ohio time) today in the Starfield Funeral Home, Convoy, and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials are to the American Cancer Society.
