I am so glad that this project is taking place. I spent hours on hot summer
days several years ago, down in the bowels of that jail, searching for and
copying information on the family of Bishop Henry Egly. I had visions of the
river flooding and breaking the walls (the river flows just outside). I was in
the process of chemotherapy for breast cancer at the time. It wasn't easy but
rewarding. I found the court case of the time the Bishop was sued, and wills
from family members. The court case was misfiled, but I searched till I found
it, I took the results of my searches to the Berne Historical Library, and some
to Goshen College. The records now being copied are invaluable to the history
of the Area. God Speed and his blessings on those who are doing the work. I am
now 81 years old and don't drive. I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin, or I'd be down
there to help.

Subject: Update on Adams Co
Wanted to say thank you first of all to all of you that have been working on
the new project for Adams County....
Things are going well -- in fact, better than expected.
We have over 6000 documents either scanned/photographed as of this past
weekend. In the big picture, that may not seem a lot, but it is a fantastic
start! The packets seem to take the most time as you can imagine, since the
opening, unfolding, scanning/photo and then refolding and putting them back
into their small packets is a mundane job -- but the wealth of valuable
information is and will be fantastic!
Books 6 & 7 are completely done and have been sent to the Adams Co Gen Web
Site and IN Gen Society. The plat books are in the process of being indexed
for 1907 - so those should be arriving shortly. These books cover every
township in Adams Co, along with actual hand drawn maps of each section of
the township. These do date back to around 1825 and we have them
photographed - so expect them in the near future as well!!
Karen H. has been going down in the afternoons and weekends after work and
scanning the packets -- this has been a great help in getting through these
tedious items... We have completed 12 drawers of packets of this date!
Sheryl did our photography for the 2 Insanity Books -- which were over 600+
pages each! We truly appreciate that as well and has been generous in
loaning us a scanner and other computer supplements to assist with this.
Thank you Sheryl!
Mr. & Mrs. Counterman have completed two whole books on Civil Cases -- they
were also huge books -- and they did those in just two visits! WOW! Got
your next two ready when you are!
Penny and I have been sorting out books, etc to get digitized and has been
keeping me on track on what goes next in the succession of photography-- so
you will see a lot more than just the plat books shortly as we have 3
probate books in the works. Penny is also logging the book inventory so
that we do not duplicate the records -- once is enough. LOL
Also - Karin K & Margie will be coming to Indiana in early to mid-September
to be with us! Looking forward to their visits and the extra hands in
moving this project further along. Karin will be doing the indexing for the
Civil and Estate packets -- this will be a huge project - so keep her in
your thoughts as this is going to be a LONG process to read and extract
every name that was involved for the index.
Margie is working diligently to get this information up on Gen Web as
quickly as possible -- but as my Web mistress Sara (Cemetery Seekers) knows
-- it is a long process to do html for every entry -- not just a few clicks
and POOF it's done.... Thanks to both for their dedication in providing this
information for so many others! It is truly appreciated not only by myself
but I know from the feedback we've received - that others do appreciate your
hard work.
Also - Shana Neuenschwander of the Heritage Room (Library of Berne) will be
making this information available to all as well -- she is very excited to
have this information and we certainly appreciate her enthusiasm and
kindness in accepting this information and making it available for research.
Guess that's all for now -- time to get back to indexing...
Have a great week and let me know if you have any questions....
