DEATH CLAIMS IRVIN SHAFFER
"Tim" Shaffer, City Employe, Dies This Morning At Home
Irvin "Tim" Shaffer, 62, city street department employe, died at 10 o'clock this morning at his home, corner St. Marys and Walnuts streets, following a six weeks' illness.
Mr. Shaffer suffered from several complications and little hope was extended for his recovery.
Born in St. Mays township, Adams county, February 25, 1873, Mr. Shaffer was a life long resident of this county. He moved to Decatur about 18 years ago. He formerly was employed at the old Holland-St. Louis sugar factory.
Seven years ago Mr. Shaffer became an employe of the city street department. He was a faithful worker.
Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose of the city.
Besides the widow, Mr. Shaffer is survived by three children from a first marriage, namely Mrs. Agnes Archer, Pleasant Mills; Mrs. Aletha Hahn, Muncie; Mrs. Lucile Schuster, Kenton, Ohio and two children by his second marriage, Mrs. James Smith and Cecil Shaffer of this city.
Funeral arrangements are not completed.

ADAMS COUNTY NATIVE DIES
Mrs. Josephine Ehrsam Dies This Morning At Fort Wayne
Mrs. Jospehine Ehrsam, 83, former Adams county resident, died this morning at Fort Wayne at the home of her son, William.
Death was caused by infirmities following an illness of about six weeks. She had been critically ill for some time.
The deceased was born in Bobo, St. Mary's township, where she resided most of her life. Some time ago she moved to Fort Wayne to make her home with her son.
Her husband preceded her in death. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Sephus Melchi, wife of the local chief of police; Mrs. Will Bunner, of Bobo; Mrs. Rollie Smith of Decatur and the son, William, of Fort Wayne.
The body will be returned to the home of the daughter, Mrs. Sephus Melchi of this city, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock and may be viewed there until the time of the funeral. Funeral services will be held at the Melchi home, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and at the Mobo (sic) M. E. church at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Lloyd Bower, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Mt. Tabor cemetery.

Russell Wells dies in airplane crash
Russell O. Wells, 67, of 718 High street, Fort Wayne, a retired city fireman, and a relative of several Decatur residents, was killed in a light plane crash at Tomah, Wis., Sunday morning.
Two other Fort Wayne men were injured and are reported in fair condition at Tomah memorial hospital. They are John E. (Red) Rarick, 48, owner of the Rarick Hardware Store, and Rickey Beyhan, 17, a junior at North Side high school.
The three were enroute to Rarick's cabin on Rice Lake, Wis., for fishing, and had stopped overnight at the Tomah airport for the weather to clear. Authorities said the light single-engine plane took off about 11:15 a.m. but stalled near the end of the runway and nosed into a ditch.
Born in Salem, Wells had lived in Fort Wayne 50 years. He retired from the Fort Wayne fire department 12 years ago after 25 years of service. For the past 18 years he had operated the North Woods Christmas tree sales during the holiday season.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; five daughters, Mrs. Ray Cavendarand, Mrs. Harry Bailey, both of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Don Merki of Champaign, Ill., Miss Patricia Wells, at home, and Mrs. James Beal of Fort Wayne; four sons, Dr. Robert Wells of Benton, Ill., James Wells of Torrence, Calif., Dr. Thomas Wells of Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Tex., and Ralph Edward Wells, at home; 15 grandchildren; two half-brothers, Bill Merriman of Decatur, and Arthur Merriman of Fort Wayne; and three sisters, Mrs. Olive Solomon of Tocsin, Mrs. Charles Fetters of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Frieda Colchin of Decatur.
The body will be returned to the C.M. Sloan & Sons funeral home in Fort Wayne. Arrangements have not been completed.

DEATH CLAIMS MARY THATCHER
Mrs. John W. Thatcher Dies at Bobo Early Sunday Morning
Mary Jane Thatcher, 66, wife of John W. Thatcher and a resident of Bobo, died at her home Sunday morning at 2:25 o'clock.
Mrs. Thatcher was born September 25, 1867, a daughter of Martha and Ezekial Troutner. She was married to John W. Thatcher on December 24, 1889. To the union four children were born, three of whom preceded their mother in death.
The husband, one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Waltke and a grandson, Johnny George Waltke survive. One granddaughter, Audrey Mary, is deceased.
Mrs. Thatcher was one of a family of four children. One brother, Levi Troutner preceded her in death. She is survived by John Troutner of Bellingham, Washington, and Sarah Troutner. A niece and a nephew, Mrs. Luther Funk, Decatur, and Eugene Troutner of Bellingham, Washington, survive, together with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bobo United Brethren church with Rev. Kindle of Huntington is charge. Burial will be in the Bobo cemetery. S. E. Black of this city will have charge of the funeral.

G. W. THATCHER DEATH'S VICTIM
Retired Business Man Dies At Rivare Thursday Night
George W. Thatcher, 67, of Rivarre, a retired business man, died at his home Thursday night at 11:50 o'clock. Death was due to cancer of the throat.
Mr. Thatcher was born in Van Wert county, Ohio, October 21, 1865, a son of John and Elizabeth Thatcher. He was united in marriage to Margaret Williams of Columbus, Ohio, on August 22, 1889.
The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the Order of Owls, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose.
Surviving besides the widow are two sons, William N. Thatcher of Detroit, Michigan, and Albert E. Thatcher of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, John Thatcher of Rivarre and James Thatcher of Fort Wayne; a sister, Mrs. Anthony Kochs of Fort Wayne, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the United Brethren church at Rivarre and burial will be made in the Rivarre cemetery. Rev. D. O. Johnson of Spencerville, Ohio will officiate. The body will be removed to the home from the S. E. Black Funeral Parlors Saturday morning.

Miss Edith Thatcher Succumbs of Heart Trouble and Complications
Resided At Home - Of Mr. Chronover in St. Mary's Township
Sick for Some Time.
At. 12:30 o'clock this afternoon Miss Edith Thatcher succumbed from heart trouble and other complications at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chronover in St. Mary's township, where she had made her home for the past five years. Miss Thatcher had been ill form some time and it was known to her relatives and friends that death was but a matter of a short time. Miss Thatcher was born in Geneva in 1899. When eleven years of age her mother passed away and she was made a ward of the children's board of guardians, which secured a home for her with Mr. and Mrs. Chronover. The father of the young girl is residing in Michigan, as is a sister, Nellie. Another sister, Mrs. Lottie Gephart, resides in this county. No funeral arrangements have as yet been made.

Israel Stoneburner Dies This Morning
Funeral Services Friday Afternoon
Israel B. Stoneburner, 66, native and former resident of Decatur, died at 7:15 o'clock this morning at his home, 908 East Lewis street, Fort Wayne. He had been in ill health for five years and bedfast for the past eight weeks.
After spending most of his life in Decatur, he moved to Convoy, O., until three years ago when the family moved to Fort Wayne. He was a retired salesman.
He was born in Decatur Sept. 3, 1883, a son of Abraham and Rachel Johnson-Stoneburner.
He was a member of the First Methodist church of this city and the Masonic lodge here.
Surviving are his wife, Beatrice, two sons, Roger and Richard Stoneburner, both of Fort Wayne, three grandchildren and one brother, Thomas Stoneburner of Fort Wayne. Three sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Zwick funeral home, with burial in the Decatur cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Winteregg-Linn Funeral Home for Lawrence Johnston, 69, of route 6, who died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday at the Adams county memorial hospital.
The son of Maynard and Mae Williams Johnston, he was born near Monroe April 17, 1897. He was a lifelong resident of the Decatur community area, and a member of the Decatur EUB church, Bethany congregation.
A step-sister, Mrs. Ida Whitright, preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the Winteregg-Linn Funeral Home, where services Tuesday will be in charge of Rev. Fuhrman Miller. Burial will follow in the Honduras cemetery.

Mrs. Vera O. Gause dies this morning
Mrs. Vera O. Gause, 69, of 403 North Third street, died at 9:05 a.m. today at the Adams county memorial hospital following an extended illness. She had been hospitalized for four days.
She was born in Decatur June 12, 1900, a daughter of Charles H. and Eva E. Tritch-Draper, and was married to Cecil C. Gause Sept. 12, 1916. her husband preceded her in death July 6, 1968.
Mrs. Gause was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harry (Mildred) Hebble of Decatur, and Mrs. Walter (Pat) Bienz of Washington Court House, O.; one brother, Ralph Draper of Bluffton; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two sons, Paul and Kenneth Gause, and one brother are deceased.
The body was removed to the Winteregg-Linn funeral home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, pending arrival of the daughter from Ohio.

Mrs. Oscar Ainsworth, 59, Dies At Home Here, Of Paralysis
Mrs. Ditha Ainsworth, 59, wife of Oscar Ainsworth, life long resident of Adams County, died at her home on Schirmeyer street, at 4:45 o'clock Thursday evening of paralysis. Mrs. Ainsworth had been ill for nine weeks.
She was born in Adams county, near Bobo, July 15, 1873, a daughter of James and Mary Jane Ault-Thatcher. She was united in marriage in 1899 to Oscar Ainsworth.
Surviving is the husband and one son, Gayl of Bobo; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Krick of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Permelia King of Wabash.
Mrs. Ainsworth was a member of the United Brethren church at Bobo for many years. The body was removed to the S. E. Black Funeral Parlors and will be returned to the home late this afternoon where friends may view it after seven o'clock tonight.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock (C. S. T.) at the home and at two o'clock at the Bobo U. B. church. Rev. Walter Johnson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Mt. Tabor cemetery.

PROMINENT BOBO RESIDENT DIES
Josiah Leander Chronister, 70, Dies Suddenly Of Heart Trouble
Josiah Leander Chronister, 70, of Bobo, died suddenly at 4 o'clock this morning, Monday, March 12, 1928, from an attack of heart trouble and indigestion. Mr. Chronister had been feeling ill for a few days, but was able to attend church services at the Bobo United Brethren church, of which he was a member, Sunday.
Josiah Leander Chronister was born April 25, 1857, in St. Marys township, Adams county. At the time of his death he resided at Bobo where he was associated with his son, Clarence Chronister, in the operation of the Bobo Mill.
Early in life, the deceased was united in marriage with Miss Ida Merrel. To this union, six children were born. His wife died March 25, 1886, and on Nov. 5, 1901, he united in marriage with Miss Ida H. Ayers, the surviving widow; Rufus L. Chronister is the surviving son of this marriage.
Maxine Lillian and Goldie Beatrice Chronister preceded their father in death. Surviving children of the first marriage are: Mrs. Ada Geier, of Canada; Clarence E. Chronister, at home; Mrs. Bessie Padashek, of Washington state; Milton Chronister, of Bobo. Stepchildren of the deceased are Oscar Teeple, of Decatur, Pearl and Paul Newberry, of Detroit. Three sisters and three brothers also survive, as follows: Mrs. George Humerickouse, of Craigville; Mrs. S. T. Welker, of near Bobo; Cora Chronister, of near Decatur; Albert and William Chronister residing near Bobo; and Ed Chronister, residing near Decatur. Eighteen grandchildren also survive.
For a number of years, Mr. Chronister had been a faithful teacher of the Men's Bible class of the Bobo Brethren Sunday school.

FORMER LOCAL WOMAN EXPIRES
Malinda Zimmerman Is Death's Victim at Ft. Wayne Hospital
Mrs. Malinda Zimmerman, 84, of Fort Wayne for many years, a resident here, died yesterday the the Anthony Wayne hospital in Fort Wayne, after a six weeks illness with senility.
Mrs. Zimmerman was born in Berks Co, Pennsylvania and came here when a girl. She married Eli Zimmerman who owned a section of land just east of Decatur and for years the family was one of the best known in this county. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Zimmerman married William Frobfield who died about fifteen years ago. One son, George Zimmerman, survives, residing in Fort Wayne also.
Private funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock from the Schone funeral home. Dr. Charles H. Smith officiating and burial will be in Maple Grove (sic; should be Maplegrove or Decatur) cemetery.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at her home, 6373 S. County Rd. 350 East, with burial in Bunker Hill Cemetery, rural Geneva.
Visiting hours are 1-8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday at her home.
Funeral arrangements were by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.

Paul M. Short, 51, a resident of Dunkirk, died on Monday morning, November 24, 2008, in an automobile accident.
