At http://www.indyrad.iupui.edu/public/appldorn/geneal/cemetery/backesto.htmi there is a listing for
Mary A. Ray Sackett (1830-1919)
I checked my files and found someone who asked me a question about a nearby Ray family. The Backestro file contains data on some of the people she was asking about. On a hunch, I asked whether she knew who Mary A. Ray Sackett might be. Her reply and my original message appear below.

Ted,
Thanks for the link. I will check it out.
I have a Mary A. Ray, born March 9, 1838, daughter of George Wesley Ray & Eleanor Williams Ray. Could this be your person?
Or I have a Mary Ann Smith, born August 22, 1830, died April 9, 1919 who married a Samuel Sackett, December 13, 1866. She is the daughter of Joseph R. Smith & Lydia Reaves. I just figured it out. Mary Ann Smith's first husband was Elisha E. Ray who died July 31, 1861.
Do you need more information?
Thanks,
Elaine

Ted,
I have Anna Barbara Eley, daughter of Michael Eley and Rachel Daniels. Anna Barbara Eley married Levi Ray, after his wife Eliza Merryman died.
Do these people appear in your tree?
Thank,

While doing some related research, I located some information on these individuals at http://www.indyrad.iupui.edu/public/appldorn/geneal/cemetery/backesto.htmi
That site (Backestro Cem., Monroe Twp., Adams Co., IN) yields:
Levi Ray, b. 22 Mar 1815, d. 18 Aug 1888
Eliza Merryman, b. 1 Sep 1822, d. 2 May 1852
Rachel C. Ray, b. abt Feb 1866, d. 8 Jul 1866
Robert Ray, b. abt Apr 1864, d. 29 May 1864
(The latter two are listed as children of L & A B Ray).
Several other Ray family members are listed.
You wouldn't happen to know who Mary A. Ray Sackett (1830-1919) is, would you?

While searching for new resources and looking for information on newly discovered ancestors in older resources, I began comparing 1840 census data to one Sackett family. The first family listed at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/in/adams/census/1840/pg010.txt is that of Samuel Sacket [Sackett]. The 1840 census doesn't list names of those in the household, but it's possible to compare known children to estimate who is present and who might be missing.
We know from other sources that Samuel moved to Blue Creek Twp., Adams Co., IN, on Oct 27, 1836 (see http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~teking/simon/pafg25.htm#4453C) and that his first wife, Isabella Moore died there later that year. He had six children by his first wife.
In 1837, Samuel married Julie (or Julia) Ann Heath. By 1840, Samuel and Julia had two children.
The 1840 census yields the following data:
Samuel Sacket
White Male Age 0-5 = 1 [Cyrus O,, b. 26 Dec 1837]
White Male Age 15-20 = 1 [Caleb, b. 23 Apr 1822; we know he died in 1946 in Adams Co.]
White Male Age 40-50 = 1 [Samuel, b. 5 Nov 1799]
White Female Age 0-5 = 1 [Issabell, b. 30 Mar, 1839]
White Female Age 10-15 = 1 [Aner, b. 17 Aug 1827]
White Female Age 20-30 = 1 [Julie, b. abt 1812]
Children of Samuel and Isabella who appear to be missing:
Joseph, b. 14 Oct 1830
Alexander, b. 17 Jul 1829
Two older daughters of Samuel and Isabella are also in the 1840 census with their families, but no white males 5-15 are living with them:
Mary Ann, b. 24 Oct 1825 [m. James William Major on 15 Dec 1843 in Adams Co.]
Nancy, b. 14 Aug 1823 [m. George Frank on 29 Sep 1839 in Adams Co]
That raises the question as to whether Joseph and Alexander might both have died prior to 1840.

I am taking a little time to thank all of you who have
visited my webpage located at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inadams/index.html
and appreciate the kind comments and help I have
received throughout these months since I decided to
leave the USGW Project.
In the last three months from January until today, I
have kept count of 1,788 people who have stopped by or
returned to check out the files I have created for the
webpage or check the links I have included to other
sites. Yesterday, I recorded 43 from Indiana;
17 from Florida and NY; 14 from California; 2 from
Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee; and 1 each from Iowa,
Virginia and Arizona for a total of 135 with return
visits for that day.
I would like to ask your opinion as to what you would
like seen on the website. You may write to me
privately or include your thoughts to the list. I am
not including queries, surnames or databases. They
are being covered at another site.
The webpage was made for you and not for any
particular organization. It is for your own research.
Adams County has much to offer in history as well as
genealogy and family research. There are many more
subjects and issues yet to cover, so please continue
to return and check out my site for Adams County.
Thanks everyone,
Sarah
