I posted an inquiry regarding Anthony W. DeGarmo and got several responses.
I'd like to thank all of those who offered their ideas how to learn more
about my ancestor. Today I received an e-mail from a lady who indicated she
was related to the Kern family from Adams County, IN. I accidently deleted
her e-mail. Anthony W. DeGarmo married Sarah Ellen Gessinger and Rachel Ann
Gessinger Sarah's sister married David Kern born about 1833. David and
Rachel (Gessinger) Kern had 8 children. If that person who indicated she
was related to the Kern family will e-mail me again I some information on
the Kern family.

Concerning the Union Chapel Church-- it is still in existence, but doubt if
they have any old church records. One of the old membership families might
know something. The Civil War unit you described was NOT a Confederate unit--it
was the unit from Adams County that fought for the Union. Adams County,
mostly old German settlers, were more or less pro-South during the war. Adams
County was long a "sun-down" community, and Negroes were not welcome. There are
several there now, however.
I assume you have the page 699 entry in Vol. 1, 1979 History of Adams
County, Indiana, which tells of the Schultz-Daniels connection.

I have an ancestor Anthony W. DeGarmo who lived in Adams County during the
1850's to 1865. He married Sarah Ellen Gessinger who's parents were Samuel
Gessinger and Rachel (DeGarmo) Gessinger. Anthony served in the Civil War
in Co. H 89th Indiana Infantry enlisting on August 28, 1862 and mustering
out on July 19, 1865. Reference to his service indicates he was a
confederate. It is believed Anthony was born about 1834 in New Jersey and
died October 23, 1865 in Adams County. He is buried in the Union Chapel
Church Cemetery just outside Decatur, Indiana. Does anyone know if the
Union Chapel Church is still in existence, and if so do they have burial
records?
If anyone is a descendant of the above families or has an idea how I can get
more detailed information on Anthony's service record I'd sure appreciate
your help. Information regarding the service record for Anthony was given
by an Andrew DeGarmo. Likewise I'd like to learn more about Andrew DeGarmo
who also lived in Adams County, IN.
