In an e-mail of Friday, September 6, Joy Harber discusses her research of her 3rd great grandmother, Eilza Cyphers. She notes that her research has found that her ancestors were from Frederick County, Maryland.
There are quite a few of the early Adams County settlers who came from Maryland, including my own. I am wonder how many subscribers to this web page have Adams County ancestors who came from Maryland - and the benefit of our joining forces and researching the Maryland connections. Why, because generally those early settlers came as a group. Those who were not in the first group received the feedback from Adams County and decided to make the journey.
What do you think?
Very little is known about my 3rd great grandmother,
Eliza Cyphers. Due to the mis-spelling of her maiden
named in the 1880 Allen County,IN History, we
researched the name Seipliers for years.
According to 1850 IN census data, Eliza was born in
Maryland. She married Adam Burrier(II) in Greene
County Ohio 1830/32. Adam was born in Frederick CO MD.
We don't know if they were previously acquainted in MD
or not.
There is a J.Cyphers listed in the 1810 Frederick CO
MD census.
According to an interview in the 1880 Allen CO IN
History; Adam Burrier stated that Eliza's family were
among the early settlers of Dayton Ohio. I have found
no proof of that yet. They are currently listed among
the "First Families".
We have Eliza born 1812 MD, but census records would
put her birth near 1810. D. 9 OCT 1878 in Allen CO IN.
A fellow researcher in Ohio (Syphers) told me their
are numerous spelling variations of this name;
Cyphers, Syphers, Scifers, Syferts, you name it!
I managed to find the title of a small family history
being held in the collection at the Coshocton County
Library, Ohio, by Ailene Fitch Lewis entitled:
"The Tredway, Gooch, Embry, Cyphers and Allied
Families from England to Maryland, Virginia, Ohio,
Kentucky and Illinios." 35 ppgs.
I would LOVE to see what Cyphers info. is in there.
I'd love to work with anyone doing Cyphers (any
spelling) research; especially from MD or Ohio.
Best Regards,
Joy (Zimmerman) Harber

I am trying to find information on a Benjamin Nichols, b. abt 1839- d. March 23, 1912 in Hartford Twp, Adams Co. He married Eunice Reynolds- 22 Oct 1871 in Adams Co. She is the daughter of James Walker Reynolds & Sally Sheldon.
I am trying to find out who his parents are and how he is connected to my ggg-grandmother Elizabeth Nichols Runyon, wife of Benjamin Runyon. I found a newspaper article dated 1914 that mentions Eunice Nichols attending a family gathering for David Runyon's 78th birthday, (son of John Runyon & Mary Price). Benjamin is about 20 years younger than my Elizabeth so i am trying to figure out if he is possibly her nephew or perhaps a half brother through another marriage of her fathers.
Thank you,

Downtown library to close 1 month
Shutdown to let staff make move to interim home
By Andy Gammill
The Journal Gazette
The Allen County Public Library will have to close its main library downtown
for about a month in January or early February while it moves to temporary
quarters, the library's director said.
Both the current library and new space at Renaissance Square will be closed
while staff members set up at the new location, library director Jeff Krull
said.
"We're estimating a month," he said. "I think it's reasonable to expect to be
completely closed to the public for a month to move."
Local residents will be forced to go to branch libraries or simply go without.
The library's genealogy department is scurrying to get the word out to
genealogists nationwide - about 100,000 of whom make trips to the main library
each year.
Staff members started the process of moving to the new offices Tuesday, when
the library's lease on the new building started.
The move will allow crews to start an $18.5 million renovation that will
expand the library and make improvements to the current building. The library
will be housed at Renaissance Square - surrounded by Berry, Clinton, Wayne and
Barr streets - for about three years, Krull said.
That will put about half of the library's collection out of commission for
that time, Krull said. The books that are least used will be put in storage.
The genealogy department, however, will continue to make all of its materials
available, said Curt Witcher, the department's manager.
"Every single book we have will continue to be available," he said.
In fact, when the library is moved to Renaissance Square, the space for the
genealogy department will be slightly larger than currently.
The trouble will be making sure genealogists know the library is closed for
that month, Witcher said. He plans to send e-mails to national genealogy
message boards and put notes on the library's Web site.
"We think there will be the smallest amount of consternated and confused
people possible," he said. "We do have a huge amount of people coming from
outside Allen County, but we're anticipating less than a dozen surprised
customers showing up."
Although it could put a dent in tourism to the area, the timing and planning
are perfect, said Dan O'Connell, president of the Convention and Visitors
Bureau.
"I don't think it will have any impact, really," O'Connell said. "If I had to
pick a time, January or February would be the best."
That's when the library has the fewest out-of-town visitors, he said.
Most people who visit Fort Wayne for the genealogical resources do check the
Web site first, O'Connell said. The Allen County Public Library is the second
largest genealogy repository in the country.
"This is a pretty well-informed society and hobby," he said.
Martha Barnhart, president of the Allen County Genealogical Society, doesn't
expect the monthlong closure to cause too many problems for visiting family
history buffs.
Genealogists are too meticulous not to call first, she said.
Of more concern are local genealogists who use the library regularly for their
research. They'll have to find other ways to spend their time, such as
organizing their information or writing up research, Barnhart said.
"Of course we will have to be inventive in what we do for a little while," she
said. "We're certainly going to miss the library while it's closed."
But the advantages when the library is finished will be significant, she said.
"This will be hands down one of the finest genealogy centers in the world when
we're done," Witcher said. "I think patrons will be extremely happy."

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a volunteer to do a little digging for
me in the Decatur area, and also in the Ft. Wayne
Library. I was just in the area earlier this year
from MN, but I just got some more info, and I can't
come back down to do my own research anytime soon.
And as you know, when you get new info, you're just
dying to confirm it!
I'm searching for information about the Barnett family
headed by John and Gervy in the 1850 census of Adams
Co. I'm trying to confirm that their son Henry is my
ggg-grandfather. I'd especially like it if someone
can go to Ft. Wayne to look for this family on earlier
censuses of Adams (if they exist) and Ohio and VA.
I'm also trying to find out of John and Gervy are
buried in Adams Co. I'm willing to pay for any
research time and expenses. If anyone is willing to
help me out, I'd appreciate it!
-Kristin

Abe Stucky Found Dead in His Room
Well Known Cook Dies of Heart Attack at Linn Grove
Abe Stucky, 61, died about noon Wednesday in his room above the Frank Nussbaum restaurant in Linn Grove, where he has been staying this winter. His body was found in his upstairs apartment, it is believed shortly after he died with a heart attack.
Mr. Stucky has been ailing with heart trouble and dropsy and has been confined to his room most of the time since the holidays, although able to be about his rooms. Wednesday he was restless and was not feeling well. At 10 o'clock he retired to his room. At noon when one of the Neusbaum family called at Mr. Stucky's door, his lifeless body was found.
Mr. Stucky made his living as a cook. For many years he was employed with the Erie railroad company as a cook. Due to poor health he was obliged to relinquish his work several months ago.
The deceased was a son of Benjamin and Anna Moser Stucky, to whom he was born in Hickory county, Missouri on January 8, 1872. When he was two weeks old the parents started with horse and wagon on a trip to come to Adams county. Only a few months after the family arrived the father became sick and died. Obituary of Christian C. Stucky
Death in Michigan and Was Buried Here Yesterday, Leaves Many Relatives
Christian C. Stucky, was born near Linn Grove, Indiana, Oct. 4th, 1858 and died at his home near Hesperia, Michigan, Sept. 6, 1919, aged 60 years, 11 months, and 2 days.
He was married to Catherine Fox, Aug. 25, 1883, at Linn Grove. To this union seven children were born, two dying in infancy.
Linn Grove was their home until the spring of 1908, when the family moved to a farm near Hesperia, Michigan, in search of a climate that would prove beneficial to Mr. Stucky's health. This object was gained and for a number of years he was benefited by the change. But for three years he has been noticeably failing and rapidly so for several months, till he passed peacefully away on Saturday evening. Mr. Stucky was converted in his early manhood and was an earnest faithful Christian to the end. To one familiar with his home life, it would seem that his motto has been "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." In the last hours of his life he gave evidence of an unshaken faith as he expressed himself as being "ready" and "glad" to go to meet his Lord.
He was a public spirited, a good neighbor, a devoted husband and father, and leaves to mourn their loss his wife, Mrs. Catherine Stucky, five daughters, Mrs. J. B. Bixler, Miss Delilah Stucky, Mrs. Edgar Johnson and the Misses Marie L. and Mamie G. Stucky, and four grandchildren, six sisters, and four brothers, nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held Sept. 9, 10 A. M. from the Linn Grove Missionary church, west of Berne, Ind.
Rev. S. J. Grabill read Psalm 27, which was Mr. Stucky's wish. On Friday morning his youngest daughter asked him what to read, and he said "Read the 27th Psalm." Bro. Grabill made a few remarks ands them led in prayer. Then followed a message from the Word both in German and English, text found in Heb. 11: 10 and 13, 14, subject, Our Eternal Home. Interment was made in the M. R. E. cemetery west of Berne.
Mr. Stucky used to be a member of the Missionary church before he moved to Hesperia, Michigan.

The Genealogy Society sent some articles & I had communication with some distant relatives on the Berger/Barger side. They went to the Cemetary & took pictures of gravestones. It meant so much.
