Karin,
This is William F. Roop, s/o Rachel Croninger and Amos Roop. Here are some
notes on him:
OBIT----William F. Roop, Laid to Final Rest Sunday Afternoon.
Sunday afternoon occurred the funeral of William F. Roop, from his late
home in Blue Creek township, two miles southwest of Salem. The religious
rotes were spoken by the pastor of the Decatur Christian Church, and a
quartette from that church supplied the singing of appropriate hymns. The
remains were laid to rest under the direction of S. S. Buchanan & Son of the
town, and were placed in a crypt in the Willshire mausoleum. There was a
large attendance at the funeral, including fifty members of Cas. A. Knot
lodge, Knight of Pythias, of which Mr. Roop had been a member for a great
many years, the Knights conducting a brief service at the mausoleum.
Mr. Roop, who died at his home near Salem Friday morning, Oct. 15,
1920, was aged 72 years, 10 months and 5 days. He had been ill for a year
or longer, a victim of acute kidney trouble. Mr. Roop was born in Van Wert
County, Ohio, but moved to Adams county, Indiana a number of years ago,
where he continued to reside until taken in death.
Deceased was twice married, his first wife being Lucinda Weimer, and to
their union two children were born---Mrs. Reynolds of Coffeyville, Kansas,
and Mrs. Mollie Mason of Kansas City. His second wife was Lavina Shilta,
who with their two sons, Lauren A. Roop of Detroit, Mich., and Dan O. Roop
of Blue Creek township, survive, together with the two daughters by the
former marriage. 10-2201920

Chris,
I've done considerable research on the Civil War and have found that the
furlough of captured prisoners was a fairly common practice. This
occurred more often during the beginning of the war since there were few
prisoners of war camps on either side, thus each side allowed prisoners
to be released and sent home until an exchange could occur. Essentially,
they didn't know what to do with prisoners once they were captured! It
was more or less a "handshake" agreement that furloughed solders would
not fight until an exchange could occur.
It is interesting the 89th Indiana Regiment found themselves in this
situation in their first battle and were sent home soon after they had
enlisted! They were captured about 3 weeks (Sept., 1862) after their
official enlistment (Aug., 1862) and returned to duty by Oct., 1862. I
had two ggg-grandfathers serve in the 89th: William Engle and James
Barnett.

is possible that your Elmer could be one of their grandchildren or great
grandchildren. Both David and Rebecca are buried New Mt. Tabor Cem, Adams

I also don't have any children listed for Jesse, so any one of those three
is a possibility.

Hello-
I'm looking for Charlotte Miller (nee McDaniel), wife of Lee Miller. She would
be about 73 years old, and the widow of Lee Miller. Lee passed away, probably in
the early 1990s. Charlotte and Lee had 2 daughters, Rhonda and Melita. I recently
found a Christmas photo of the family in a box of pictures belonging to my
grandmother, and the photo was taken by a studio in Decatur. I'm guessing that the
photo was taken in the 1980s.
Would appreciate help locating Charlotte, Rhonda, or Melita.
Thank-you, Chris Andrews
Hello-
My ancestor Thomas W. Andrews was in the 89th Indiana Infantry. I recently read that the unit, along with
several other Union units, were captured by Confederate forces at Munfordville, Kentucky in September of 1862.
They were then paroled shortly after (in a day or 2 it appears), and the unit was reassembled several months
later.
I am not familiar with Civil War prisoner protocol, but this seems like they were freed pending the release
of an equal number of Confederate soldiers in a prisoner exchange. It almost seems like they returned to Indiana
to wait for the Confederacy to receive their returned prisoners, and once this was accomplished, the men of the
89th Indiana Infantry were free to again take up arms and re-join the war.
Does anyone know the story here. My interpretation is based primarily on the units history as described in
the 1887 "History of Adams County".
Thanks, Chris Andrews

Can anyone tell me about the Robert TISDALE, age 72 and born in
Virginia, who appears in the 1850 census of Adams Co. (p. 60)? Was he
married to someone else before the Florilla, age 58, who is listed with
him in 1850?
I apologize if this is a repeat posting; I meant to post this message
earlier but now believe that I neglected to do so. Can't find it in my

Thank you.

Was the marriage in Adams Co., IN? You didn't specify in your message. Since there's no general index for marriages after 1920, someone would need more information as to the approximate date in order to do a lookup.
