I suspect that the following women found in the Jay co., IN birth records
are daughters/grandaughters of Vail Courtright. He was b. 1833 in Harrison
Co., OH, still there in 1850 but supposedly moved to IL after that. His
Aunt Rebecca Courtright Kelly (my line) moved to Adams Co., IN in 1855. If
anyone know anything abt these folks let me know! Cindy

Following is a reply I sent to another list, however since it involves my
family that ended up in Adams Co., IN I thought it should be posted here as
well.
***********
Judy, The McClain/Clean/Lean, etc. family is as thick as fleas in the Ohio
River Valley area. You've really got me curious now b/c they lived near my
John Courtright who was from Sussex Co., NJ.
He left the area c1799 & went to Washington Co., PA, in 1818 he crossed the
state line into OH. The McClains married into my Courtright line later in
the 1880's in Harrison Co., OH. I also find McClains earlier as witnesses
to the will of my Daniel Kelly in 1831 Harrison Co., OH:
Daniel Kelly, Union twp., ___ County, date of will 4/28/1830;date of probate
8/1/1831; wife, name not given: children, William, Isaac, David, Jonathan,
Anne, Charlotte, Mary, Elizabeth; execs., William Champer, Jacob Hing:wits.,
William Champer, John S. McClean
I've tried for years to determine if Champer is the same family as the
Chambers. Again both interconnect w/ my OH River Vally families. Daniel
Kelly was the same age as John Courtright & their grandchildren
intermarried. I believe Daniel's son William Kelly married Margaret McClain
in 1806 Harrsion co., OH.
Daniel Kelly was in Washington Co., PA in 1790, earlier than John
Courtright. He also owned 100 acres of land in Brooke Co., (W)VA, I believe
he may have operated a ferry 1800-1812. Also at least one of the ORV Kelly
families had ties to NJ. Sorting them out is the problem!
By the 1850's branches of all these families headed west, my families went
to Darke/Mercer/Van Wert/Preble Cos., OH & Adams/Jay/Randolph/Grant Cos.,
IN.

Hello All, I've found my Kelly/ford connection to be more tangled that I
first thought. It seems I have a 1st cousin marriage. Or at least it looks
that way.
The only way for it to NOT be so is that there were 2 different Cora E.
Kelly's who married Frank/Charles Ford in 1889 & lived in Wabash Twp. In
some records (the birth records online) he is listed as Charles Ford, in the
census he's Frank.
I also have conflicting birthdates for Cora. She was the d/o Jonathan D.
Kelly & Elizabeth Ruth Tharp. The Jay County Indiana Cemetery Record
Transcriptions give a date of 10/24/1874. The 1900 census gives a date of
Aug 1880. Since she married in 1889 that can't be right, but how could the
census be so far off?
Frank L. Ford was the s/o George W. Ford & Martha J. Kelly. Martha Kelly
was the sister to Jonathan Kelly named above. They were children of Justice
Kelly & Rebecca Courtright.
Is ayone researching the Ford family of Adam & Jay Co., IN? thanks, Cindy

Surname: Whipple

I have already gotten James Whipple's Civil War Records and in them he
gave two different birthplaces plus on the census, his widower, my g-grandmother,
Mary Whipple gave a different birth place. I have checked all three birthplaces
listed and in each one there are several James Whipples. I am stymied as
how to find out FOR SURE where James came from.
Thanks for you response.

Gosh, I wish I had gotten your message before I left for Indiana. I just
got back home yesterday. I visited a couple of cemeteries in Bobo while
I was in Adams County. Mt Zion Cemetery is a very small, old cemetery,
behind/next to a church in Bobo. Unfortunately, I did not record all of
the names on the tombstones. Surnames of other tombstones in the cemetery
are: Shell, Heath, Chronister, Hilton, Rash, and Jackson. The cemetery
is on Hwy 101 S.
Another Cemetery which was nearby is Mt. Tabor Cemetery. There is a new
section and an old section. In the old section I found my JACKSON ancestors
that came to Adams Co. in 1849, from Wayne Co., OH. Good luck!

Is anyone researching the HELM family? I know early on they are in the
Minisink Valley : Jacob Helm & wife Helena Van Etten. Daughter Cattrina
married William Courtright (unknown parentage). William C. & Cattrina bap.
3 children Samuel, Hester & Johannes in Minnisink w/ the last entry
9/14/1894.
Later in St. Mary's Twp., Adams Co., IN (where my Rebecca Courtright Kelly
migrated to) is found another Helm family from PA. Anyone know of a
connection?
Cindy
The Ford family seems to connect to my Kelly & Tharp families over several
generations. Is anyone researching them? The earliest connection seems to
be George W. Ford born 3/1842 Oh married c1869 to Martha J. Kelly. Had 4
children, only 2 known at this time: Frank L. b. 3/1875 & married to Cora E.
by 6/1900, Harvey C. born 4/1886. The C. could stand for Courtright as
Martha's parents were Justus Kelly & Rebecca Courtright. thanks, Cindy
