Very good points Tim! That's pretty funny abt your own marriage record
being wrong, but you do know that no matter what ANY document says your wife
is the leading authority on this! :>) I'd just like to add something that
everyone probably already knows. We all use the saying "it's not written in
stone". Well even if it is it isn't. Tombstones are often wrong. The info
is only as accurate as the memory of the person giving the info, often a
bereaved relative who might not have really known the exact birthdate
anyway.

Margie Pearce have been trading information about our connections. She had
asked me some few weeks ago about one individual that I had in my data as
Sarah Hoover and she had as Sarah Hower. I checked and found that the obit,
which is where I got my information, did indeed list her as Sarah Hoover,
and wrote Margie to that effect.
Then a couple of days ago, as I was posting some of the information I
gathered on my last trip to Decatur in February, I discovered a marriage
record from the courthouse that gave the name as Hower after all.
I repeat this just to warn you that because you read something in an obit
doesn't mean it's true. Family members, who provided the information, can be
wrong, and the newspaper (sorry Dick Heller!) could also have made a typo.
Now, you probably assume that original records (birth and death records at
the Adams Co. Health Dept., or marriage records in the County Clerk's
office) are always correct, right? Wrong. I have found any number of
mistakes in original records as well. In fact, last trip I discovered that
my own marriage record in the courthouse is incorrect...the date is wrong!!!
(Besides my wife, I have written proof at home).
Always be ready to accept that errors will occur. You simply have to do the
best you can given the available records, and try to verify events through
more than one source, if possible. And be ready to admit you're wrong when
necessary.
Good hunting!

Hi Folks,
Just a reminder. When someone posts a query, obit, bio etc. on the boards at
the Adams Co. web site, their posting will automatically be sent to this

Rachel, I don't know if I can help but below is an outline of what I know.
Mary Bitler was married to Christopher B. Tharp or CB as he's shown on most
records. He was her 3rd husband & she was his 2nd wife. They had no
children. CB was my ancestor & some of the info on Mary I obtained from
CB's Civil War pension. He married Mary just 3 months after his 1st wife
died. Think that was a bit quick even for those times! The other info I
obtained from the census, the 1850 is online & I have the 1860 on CD. I
don't know if Mary had children w/ her 2nd husband. Let me know if this
helps, just remember I don't have any othe info on her desc. Cindy

Hi Folks,
Just to clarify, any queries posted to the boards on the Adams Co. web site,
are now being forwarded automatically to this list. At the top of the
message you'll see will be something like:
Posted on: Adams County, In Query Forum
Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Adams?read=519
Be sure when you respond that you click on the Board URL which will take you
directly to that message on the board. Post your reply there, following the
directions. It's very likely that many people posting queries are not on
this mailing list, and they will not see any replies you post directly here.
Your reply on the board will automatically appear on this list as well.
Any questions, let me know.
I have not seen any of the recent viruses on this or the Randolph Co. list,
which I manage. Rootsweb does a pretty good job of filtering out those kinds
of problems. Just be sure never to open an email attachment unless you know
exactly what it is and who it is from. (This list will not forward
attachments). And keep your messages in text format (a selection in your
email program).
Good hunting!

Obituary of Mary Darst French
Mary Darst French was born Miami County, Ohio, November 20, 1819, and departed
this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs John Steiner, May 20th, 1907,
aged 87 years 6 months.
She was married to Lot French in Miami County, Ohio September 14th, 1837.
In the year of 1840 with several other pioneer settlers they moved to Adams
Co. IN. Here Mr and Mrs French settled on a farm on the banks of the Wabash
River where they mad a home until their respective deaths. To this union
were born twelve children, seven sons and five daughters, of whom her husband,
who died July 18th, 1891 , four sons and two daughters preceded her in
death. Grandma French, as she was commonly known to every one was in early
life converted to the Christian Faith. Shortly after her conversion she
united with the Dunkard church at Walnut Level, of which church she remained
a faithful and devoted member until her death.
Not only did she profess christianity, but showed by her daily life that
she walked with Christ. Ever concerned about the welfare of others, she
forgot self in trying to bring comfort and happiness to those about her.
Always looking on the bright side of life she bore her sufferings never
losing sight of that blessed hope whose peace, a christian alone can know.
She often expressed her desire to go home, and in the early part of her
sickness, when perfectly rational, expressly stated that she was not afraid
to meet her God; that she had nothing to lose and all to gain. Thus she
lived and died.
There remain to mourn her departure three sons; Marion, residing on a farm
in Wells County, IN and Miller and Jerry in the west. Three daughters,
Mrs Loyina North of Bluffton, Mrs Louisa Hoffman of Linn Grove, and Mrs
Lydia Stiner, residing on the old home farm; there are twenty four grandchildren,
ten great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. And though she is gone
, the life she lived can never be erased from the lives of those with whom
she came into contact

Biography of Mary Darst French
When Adams Co. IN was more of a wilderness than it is today; at a time
when roads were almost unknown; when wolves and bears kept the early settlers
in constant alarm; and the lurking indian was to be made a friend, there
immigrated from Miami Co. OH. a young couple who were destined to play
a great part in shaping the future of our country. It was in the year of
1840, that Mr and Mrs Lot French , bidding adieu to kin and home, struck
boldly into the wilderness and made straightway for this state, The
Unsettled West.
It is indeed hard for one of younger years to conceive the tru meaning
of the above paragraph. Yet if you will let the finger of memory trace
back the pages of history, it will tell you a story far more varied and
thrilling then pen is able to describe.
Where now we see large farms with their fertile fields, and lowing herds,
beautiful country homes with their modern conveniences, rural phones and
rural mail delivery, thriving villages and prosperous towns, all the true
milestones in the history of progress and civilization., there stood the
mighty woods, swaying to and fro in the silent majesty of all its years.
It was into the heart of the latter that this young couple came, following
the rude roads and trails, and were they were neither, clearing a path
for themselves until they settled on a uncleared farm, which had been purchased
by Grandpa French on a previous trip, on the very banks of the Wabash River,
three miles north of the present town of Linn Grove.
The hardships and dangers were many and great for as Grandma has told us;
:the roads were sometimes so bad and progress so slow that when forced
by gathering night and the fatigue of the days travel to seek rest neath
the starry tent which alone afforded shelter, they could look back and
see the smoldering coals of the fires of the previous day.
The dangers and hardships did not cease, when they had arrived safely at
their chosen place, but rather increased. There in the midst of an unbroken
forest which must be cleared ere they could till the soil, a home must
be built, a life lived and a living made. Armed with strong muscles and
stout hearts, they stoved and toiled, yet not in vain. Littlt by little,
Gods eternal sunshine filtered through the openings made by the sturdy
stroke of the pioneers ax. Day by day, these openings grew and ripening
grain usurped the place of giant oak.
Yet, they did not rest, neither lose faith in the task that they had set
out to do, but year after year, the resounding echo of that awful ax was
heard until a neighboring clearing was reached, and earth freed from innumerable
years of servitude, gave forth her thanks in abundant harvests to them.
For many years Mr and Mrs French kept a tavern on the old State road and
many were the pioneer errants who shared their hospitality. Let me say
here in due respect to the many of these early settlers who have gone before,
and the few who still remain, that the above might be told of each.
Yet, tis the passing away of another of these grand persons from the earth
of care, to that Haven of rest, that calls forth this short reminiscence.
And ere I pass to give in detail her life of usefulness, let me quote (not
only to her memory) but to the honor and glory of all.
