the farm east of the river, since owned by Deacon Lane. Mr. Mann was a
turner of wooden bowls, and it is said followed this vocation for a number
of years after his arrival in Elyria. During the fall following his arrival
Mrs. Mann gave birth to a son, the second born in the twp. Mrs Mann died
on the 9th day of March 1823,and her remains were the first interred in
the Elyria cemetery. Inscription reads:"In memory of Mrs Clamancy Mann,
consort of Enos Mann, who died March 9,1823, in the fortieth year of her
age" Have you read this book Tim? I also have the land records for Enos

Elias Mann with no luck thus far. Who was the father of Enos Mann and was
he from Mass? It seems very possible that they were brothers. I just cannot
prove it on paper or make a link. Do you know what the first childs name
was from Ohio? Looks like Enos remarried, since the children on the census
were born in Indiana. The Adams Co.,Indiana deeds has a Elias Mann to wife
Sarah/Susannah, any clue to who they maybe? Hope to here from you.Would
share any info that I may have.

the late Joseph Hocker, and is well stocked and doing a good business...
1934 Jackson Street Fire
A fire on Friday, July 13, 1934 destroyed three Monroe businesses and came
close to destroying almost the entire north side of the business area on
Jackson Street. The businesses were the Hocker Drug store, Andrews general
store, and the Lobenstein Funeral Parlor. The fire was on the exact spot
as
the
fire which destroyed five businesses in 1905, and had it not been for the
assistance of the Berne and Decatur fire departments, this fire could have
been
just as destructive.
The fire broke out about 11:00 p.m. in the general store owned by True
Andrews.
The fire was believed to be started by an electrical problem in a
refrigeration
unit in the basement of the Andrews store. Mr. Andrews had just closed
the
store shortly before the fire was discovered, but had not noticed any
problems.
By the time the fire was discovered by Mrs. Belle Hocker, who lived with
her
family above the Hocker drug store, the fire had already engulfed the Andrews
store. The Lobenstein funeral parlor was also in flames by the time the
alarm
was sounded by Mable Hocker. The Monroe fire department responded with
their
old chemical fire engine and also put in a call for assistance to the Berne
and
Decatur departments.
People soon responded to the alarm and assisted in removing whatever they
could
from the burning buildings. The Hocker drug store was also in flames by
this
time, and all three buildings were soon a mass of flames. The second floor
of
all three buildings were separated by hallways and did not have fire walls
between them, allowing the fire to move swiftly....In all six businesses
were
affected by the fire...Otis O. Hocker Drug store entire business and apartment
furnishings destroyed, total loss about $6,200....Soon after the fire,
the
town
purchased a new, modern fire truck equipped with a powerful pumper.
1962 Central Market Fire. The business district on the north side of Jackson
street suffered its' third major fire in less than sixty years on February
16,
1962, with the destruction of the Central Market grocery...The fire was
discovered in the building about 4:15 A.M. by Belle Hocker, who lived at
the
rear of the Hocker Drug store located next to the grocery. Mrs. Hocker,
who
also owned the building in which the grocery was located, had discovered
the
1934 fire in which the drug store and two other businesses were destoyed.

Lets all take a few moments to think about those veterans who knew who have
passed on.
The History of the TAPS played at military funerals.
I think you will be pleased to find out about the humble beginnings of TAPS.
Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army
Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing, Virginia.
The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land.
During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who was
severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate
soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man
back for medical attention.
Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the
stricken soldier and began pulling him toward the encampment. When the
Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a
Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and
suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light he saw
the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying
music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the
boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.
The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission to give his
son a full military burial despite his enemy status. His request was only
partially granted. The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army
band members. The request was denied since the soldier was a Confederate.
But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him one
musician.
The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical
notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's
uniform.
This wish was granted. The haunting melody, which we now know as "Taps" used
at military funerals, was born.
Day is done
Gone the sun
>From the lakes
>From the hills
>From the sky
All is well,
safely rest.
God is nigh.
Fading light
Dims the sight
And a star
Gems the sky,
Gleaning bright
>From afar,
Drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Thanks and praise,
For our days,
Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.
I, too, have felt the chills while listening to "Taps" but I have never seen
all the words to the song until now. I didn't even know there was more than
one verse. I also never knew the story behind the song and I didn't know if
you did either so I thought I'd pass it on.

NOTES
The Civil War records for Joseph show that he went into the war by

honorably discharged while suffering from overstress. He later applied
for a pension, and had to apply twice before he was given the pension.
His widow also received the pension after his death.

OBITUARY (Age 60)
BLUFFTON EVENING NEWS, MARCH 18, 1908
MONROE MAN WHO DIED OF HEART DISEASE HAD MANY RELATIVES HERE.
A telephone message to L.G.Starr Tuesday afternoon informed him of the
death of his brother-in-law, Joseph Hocker, of Monroe, Adams County,
one of the best known residents of that section. The message came from
his son John, a hardware dealer at Monroe, who said his father died of
heart disease and promising to send details as to funeral, etc., today.
The news of his death came as a shock to many friends here. He was a
brother-in-law of Mrs. J.E. Sunier, Mrs. L.G. Starr, Mrs. Josie
Beberstine and of Alexander Bovin.
A message from Monroe says that a week ago Mr. Hocker suffered an attack
of
stomach trouble with a slight bronchial complication, but in two or three
days
he seemed entirely recovered. Tuesday he was busy about his drug store
and at
the hour mentioned when suddenly he was heard to scream and persons in
the
store saw him grasp his hand over his heart and run into an adjacent
room where he fell on a couch and expired almost instantly. A physician
who was nearby responded within a minute or two but Mr. Hocker was
dead when he reached his side. He was about sixty years old. He was a
soldier of the rebellion, entering the army when but sixteen years
old as a member of Co. K, 48th Ind.
He is survived by his wife and six children. The latter are Rev. Harvey
H.
Hocker, formerly of this city, Prof. C.W. Hocker, principal of the Decatur
high school, Tony, a druggist and John, a hardware dealer at Monroe,
and another daughter, Mrs. Dr. McKeeman, lives in Ft. Wayne.
The deceased was also a brother of Samuel H. Hocker, of this city.

I am a descendant of Enos and Clemency through Joseph and Joseph E. Mann.
I have some circumstantial evidence that Enos had a brother Elias whose

information others have sent me. I'd be glad to share what I have and where
I got it if you'll email me at tsingleton(a)iclub.org. Hope to hear from

Hello everyone,
I have started working on a total redesign of the Adams Co. web site (don't
hold your breath, it's going to take a while). As part of that redesign,
I'll be moving some items. First on the agenda, I'm moving all the
biographies to the GenConnect Bio board. That will make them easy to find,
and in addition the surnames will be nationally searchable.
So if you see bios beginning to disappear from the old page, check the
GenConnect boards (the links are near the top of the home page) under Bios.
I'll let you know as other changes occur. As always, let me know if there
are any questions or problems.

POEM
Poem written by H.H. Hocker after a visit to his Indiana Home.
Here is a poem which I compounded after you left Tuesday. You should use
your
cane while reciting it. Also use the "Rose and Mary" dialect.
We just got back from Indiany
That's the state where I come from
We went to visit with old friends
And a get a glimpse of home.
Our old house is still a standing
Tho its nothing much to see
But Oh, the fondest memories
Keep a comin back to me.
I can see my dear Old Daddy
Still a workin in the store
and then I see my Mother
a standin in the door.
There was eight around the table
When we was all to home
but only three of us are left
The rest of them are gone.
We went down a past the school house
Where I used to go to school
And the church a standin by it
Where I learned the "Golden Rule."
And how well do I remember
When the summer months had come
We'd shed our shoes and stockins
And go bare foot while twas warm.
We'd play around the town all day
and when night appeared, We said
Better go on home now cause its dark
And time to go to bed.
Now I'se the one who'd snuck upstairs
and crawl beneath the sheet
But never failed to hear that call
Harvey, did you wash your feet?
Well lets get back to this here trip
We had a glorious time
With nary a cloud or shadow
To mar the bright sunshine.
Went ridin almost every day
In my nephews shiny car
Sometimes we drove for miles and miles
And sometimes not so far.
We loved to see the fields of wheat
and corn and beans and sich
And the water still a flowin
Where I went swimmmin in the ditch.
We went to see some ball games
And the circus and the fair
And even went down to the Zoo
To see the monkeys there.
We went to see the Presidents train
When he was on his route
But Harry never showed his face
Huh, We didn't give a "hoot."
Our friends would take us out to dine
and we just set and eat
and visit there for 'bout an hour
but that was mighty sweet.
Now here we are back home again
Among our friends so dear
But we promised "God be willin,"
We'd be back again next year.
Susie Hocker McKeeman, September 2, 1952

Harvey H. Hocker was born November 19, 1877 at Vera Cruz, Indiana. When
he
was
nine months of age his parents moved to Monroe, Indiana where Harvey attended
grade and high schools, later graduating in 1904 from Taylor University
at
Upland, Indiana.
He began his ministry in the North Indiana conference, his first charge
being
the Bluffton Circuit on the Fort Wayne District. Here he first manifested
the
super-abundant energy and tremendous drive that characterized his entire
ministry. Within a period of two years he had conducted sixteen evengelistic
meetings, received a large number of members into five different churches
and
led the Conference in missionary offerings.
He was a very friendly man, taking great delight in the fellowship of
community
organizations as well as the church and his own family. In 1905 he married
Miss B. Mae Williams who went with him to his first charge. To this union
there were born five children who now survive him, Mrs. Marvellee D. Moody,
Mrs. Ramona E. Reed, Merrill, Maurice and Ramon Hocker and six grandchildren,
Robert and Marvelle Moody, James and Donald Reed, Myrna Hocker McKnight,
Judy
Paulette Hocker, and five great grandchildren.
He came to California in 1909 and served nine charges in our Conference.
It
was while he was at Redondo Beach in 1922 that the writer was invited by
his
church to assist him in a series of evangelistic meetings. In the years
that
followed that invitation was repeated by every church he served during
his
active ministry. This memorial comes from the heart of a friend who greatly
admired and deeply loved this man of God whom he has known intimately for
thirty-five years.
He was truly unselfish. Always, when we worked together in evangelistic
meetings, he would labor unceasingly to prepare long lists of prospects.
He
would make innumerable contacts which only a man of his energy could do.
He
would present the challenge of Christ publicly and privately, without calling
for committments. Then, when the guest preacher arrived, the fields indeed
were ready for the harvest and he was the first to rejoice in the acclaim
which
came to others rather than to himself.
He loved music and frequently led group singing in churches and service
clubs.
His vibrant personality and enthusiasm inspired participation. When Mrs.
Mae
Hocker, a well-trained musician, passed away in 1926, leaving Harvey alone
with
five children, it was quite natural that in time he sought the
companionship of
Miss Mabel Steel whom he and the whole Hocker family had known at Redondo
Beach
where Mabel was a talented musician and a devoted church worker. On
October 1,
1928, Harvey Hocker and Mabel Steel were married during the Annual Conference
at Santa Barbara.
It proved to be a happy experience for both of them and a blessing to the
church. For the remaining 29 years of his ministry she was an efficient
co-worker, often serving as a soloist and organist as well as a leader
in
various departments of the churches they served while helping to make their
home a place where the children and grandchildren loved to visit.
The last four years of his active ministry Harvey served as Minister of
Finance, representing the Conference Board of Missions. He had the
satisfaction not only of raising approximately a half million dollars for
the
on-going work of the Kingdom but also of coaching a large number of younger
ministers so that they too know how to challenge church members to larger
and
more sacrificial giving.
Perhaps the happiest years of his life were the six years he served as
Associate and later as Minister of Visitation at the Church of the Good
Shepherd in Arcadia. His life motto was:
"I live for those who love me,
Whose hearts are kind and true,
For the heaven that smiles above me
And the good that I can do."
And the crowning appreciation of the good that he did came when the Church
of
the Good Shepherd made him Pastor Emeritus the night before he died. The
words
of the Writer of Hebrews, "He being dead yet speaketh" truly applies to
Harvey
Hocker. The work that he did and the life that he lived will continue to
speak
for many years to come even as they spoke in his days of the flesh.

Christian W. Hocker, a prominent business man of the village of Monroe,
and
the
present trustee of Monroe Township, is a native of Indiana, born in Decatur
County, January 5, 1851, the fourth son of Stephen and Susannah (Wefler)
Hocker, natives of Switzerland, the father born in 1812, and the mother
in
1819. While in his teens the father immigrated to America, and first located
in Columbiana County, Ohio. He afterward went to Stark County, Ohio. About
1850 he removed to Decatur County, Indiana, and in 1851 returned to Stark
County, Ohio. In the spring of 1864 he returned to Adams County, Indiana,
and
engaged in farming in French Township. He was married in Columbiana County,
Ohio, and was the father of eight sons and one daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Hocker
were formerly Lutherans, but afterward united with the Albright church.
Mr.
Hocker died in 1872, and the mother now resides at Newville, in Wells County,
Indiana. Christian W. Hocker, whose name heads this sketch came with his
parents to Adams County when twelve years old, where he was reared on the
home
farm, receiving his education in the common schools of the county. At the
age
of twenty one years he engaged in the sawmill and lumber business, which
he
has
since followed with success, although he started with barely enough to
pay for
the freight, running in debt for the price of the mill. In 1880 he engaged
in
the mercantile business in Monroe, in company with John W. Hendricks, under
the
firm name of Hendricks & Hocker, until the fall of 1883, when the partnership
dissolved. Mr. Hocker then became associated with Henry P. Merryman, the
firm
of Hocker & Merryman continuing in business until the spring of 1886, when
Mr.
Hocker purchased his partner's interest, and was then associated with his
brother, Franklin P. Hocker, until the fall of the same year, since which
he
has conducted the business alone. He is also engaged in farming, and has
a
fine farm of 160 acres in Monroe Township. Mr. Hocker has been twice married.
He was first married February 10, 1871, to Lucinda A. Bell, who died February
28, 1872, leaving one child--Viola B. He was again married January 10,
1876,
to Mary I. Hofer, who was born in Stark County, Ohio, February 25, 1856,
a
daughter of Michael Hofer, a former resident of Berne, Adams County, coming
to
this county in 1856. He was a tailor by trade, and now resides at Full
City,
Nebraska. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hocker--Bessie L.
and
Gertrude E. Mrs. Hocker is a member of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Hocker
has been successful in his business enterprises. In 1886 he erected his
fine
residence at Monroe, at a cost of $2,000, and also erected a commodious
business house, which on the morning of March 30, 1887, was entirely destroyed
by fire, including the total loss of stock, amounting to about $4,000,
no
insurance. Although a serious blow financially, through the influence many
friends he is again building a new block, and will be actively engaged
serving
his trade within six weeks of time of fire. The entire community wishes
him
success. In politices he is a Democrat. He takes an active interest in
public
affairs, and has held several local offices. He was elected to his present
office in 1884, and re-elected in 1886.

NEWPAPER
October 30, 1925
Abe Hocker, age 69, Inventor of the Lightning post augere and "Everlasting"
cistern pumps, and one of the best blacksmiths in the state, died suddenly
yesterday at 9:30 o'clock, while sitting in his chair talking with his
wife,
after returning from town on a business errand. Mr. Hocker was a leading
citizen of Berne and the news of his sudden death came with much grief
to his
numerous friends.
Mr. Hocker died of heart failure. He had gone about his work in his usual
manner and nothing was suspected lately of his heart trouble. Last
New-year's,
however, he swooned away and first aid was made necessary, but since then,
he
had again gone about his work in ordinary fashion.
Mr. Hocker plied his trade with much zest and became one of the most
skillful
workmen in the state. He was a man of sterling character, a man of
conviction,
and above all, a man that practiced what he preached, which won for him
many
close friends.
Mr. Hocker was born in Stark Co., Ohio, and came to Berne in 1877. He
learned his trade at Newville with Jonathan Moser from 1873 to 1876. In
the
latter year he went to Switzerland to further his knowledge in the trade
and
was apprentice for eight months, after which he returned and worked for
a year
for Jacob Braun. Then he followed his trade at Monroe for 14 months. He
then
came to Berne, and has been here since, always cheerfully at his work up
to
his
death hour.
Mr. Hocker was an active church worker in the Berne Evangelical Church.
He
was a trustee of the church, Sunday school superintendent and class leader,
and
was always a mainstay of the church, which he helped organize, he being
one of
the instigators for the founding of the Evangelical Church in Berne. In
1887
Mr. Hocker erected a building on the present site of the Fair Store, and
established his shop in it on the ground floor, letting the second story
to
the
Evangelical Association for thirteen years free of charge for religous
services. It was dedicated on December 11, 1887 as "Trinity Hall" of the
Evangelical Association.
Abe Hocker was born in Stark Co., Ohio, October 6, 1856, thus bringing
his
age at the time of his death to 69 years and 23 days. On September 24,
1882 he
was married to Martha E. Martz, to which union there were born four daughters,
two of whom with their mother survive to mourn the death of their husband
and
father. They are: Mrs. Enos D. Lehman, of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Daniel
Adler of
Denver, Colorado. Two children, Osie and Ruth, preceded their father in
their
childhood. One sister, Mrs. Mary Baumgartner also preceded him, as did
four
brothers, Joseph, John, Christian and Albert, while two brothers, Samuel
Hocker
of Bluffton, and Frank Hocker of Elreno, Okla., also survive.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock from the
residence, and at 1:30 o'clock from the Mennonite Church. It was deemed
necessary to hold the funeral in the Mennonite rather than the Evangelical
Church, in order to get a larger seating capacity for the large funeral.
Burial will be made at the M.R.E. Cemetery.
