CAUGHT IN LINES
Rufus Estell, Colored, Dragged to His Death
Rufus Estell, colored, aged about 65 years, whose home was about five miles
northeast of this city, was killed about nine o'clock last night by falling
from the seat of his wagon and being dragged under the wheels on the highway
a short distance from his home.
He had been at Cementville and was returning home, and it is presumed he
became drowsy and slipped from the seat, becoming entangled in the lines.
He was dragged a considerable distance, and the wheels mangled his body and,
in passing over his abdomen, almost disemboweled him.
Several persons heard his cries for help, but he died within a few minutes
after they reached him. The horses did not run away. Coroner C. E. Briscoe
held an inquest.
