Patrick Shields was born in Virginia in 1773. In 1800 he came to Kentucky
and in the spring of 1805 he came to Indiana and settled on the banks of the
Ohio River about two miles below New Albany. In a short time the high water
drove him from his home and he went westwardly (sic) and built a cabin on
the banks of Indian Creek near where the Town of Crandall now stands. Mr.
Shields as one of the first judges of the Court of Common Pleas.
