John Tipton settled near Brinley's Ferry on the Ohio River in 1807. At the
first election under the State Constitution, he was elected sheriff of
Harrison County, and the records show that at the July term of court, 1817,
he and his deputy, Hiram C. Boone, were fined one dollar for failing to
maintain proper order in the courtroom. Tipton served with Spencer's
"Yellow Jackets" at the Battle of Tippecanoe. After the battle, an election
for officers was held and Tipton was elected captain of the company. He was
promoted until he became a brigadier general in the service of the state and
donated to the state the Tippecanoe battleground. He died at Logansport,
April 7, 1839, and was buried with military honors.
