RAPE OF THE LOCK
Luxuriant Tresses of Hair Removed from Mrs. Will Walters' Head While She
Slept
Mrs. Bertha Walters, wife of William Walters, residing at West and Spring
streets, was the victim of some unknown scoundrel who cut off a portion of
her hair while she was asleep last night and there is not the slightest clue
that will lead to the identity of the man who cut off the beautiful tresses.
Mrs. Walters is the fortunate possessor of a luxuriant growth of chestnut
brown hair, and the deed was probably done by some envious person or through
revenge. Mrs. Walters was seen this afternoon by a TRIBUNE reporter but
could advance no reason for the deed.
Last night Mr. and Mrs. Walters retired about eight o'clock. At ten o'clock
Mrs. Walters was awakened by someone pulling at her hair which was braided
in to plaits. She thought she had been dreaming that her hair was being cut
and awakened her husband.Mr. Walters lighted a lamp, and it was found that
one of the plaits had been cut off, evidently with some dull-edged knife or
scissors as the ends of the plait were very irregular and jagged. Nearly
all of the tresses that had been severed were found in the bed.
