William H. Roose, Indiana's Birthplace: A History of Harrison County,
Indiana (New Albany IN: Tribune Company Printers) 1911, p. 10.
Edward Smith settled on the land now owned by the Harrison County
Agricultural Society near Corydon in 1806. Mr. Smith was born in England
and came to America in 1774 as a British soldier. He later deserted and
came to Harrison County and erected his cabin on a knoll near the Fairground
Spring. Smith died at Corydon in 1828, and while he was buried on the hill
south of Corydon, the exact spot cannot be located. It is not certain that
he ever joined the American army but the Daughters of the Revolution have
erected a monument to his memory. This was placed in the cemetery at Mt.
Zion near Mauckport where his wife lies.
