Terre Haute (IN) Daily Gazette, October 3, 1871.
The Board of Directors of the Indiana State Prison South at Jeffersonville
awarded the contract for convict labor for five years to A. W. Hull & Co.,
at the following rate: 100 convicts at 66 ½ cents per day and 200 at 65
cents per day. This is an advance of nearly 50 percent on the contracts
just expired. It is stated that the new company will devote their entire
energies to building railroad cars. The finances of the prison are said to
be low on account of some $8,000 or $10,000 being owing (sic) by the
contractors. The new contract goes into effect today.
