TWO MORE LAWRENCE COUNTY MURDERS
A Bedford dispatch says: "While young men were carousing at Limestone, a
small hamlet three miles west of this place located in the heart of the
quarries, James Neven was struck on the head with a beer bottle hurled by
Noah George. Two days later serious consequences developed, the injured man
became unconscious, and his recovery is doubtful. Should he die, this will
be the second murder in that locality within a week, besides the shooting of
a third person. The neighborhood is noted for its roughness. Four saloons
are located there besides several blind tigers.
"Another murder is also reported. Yesterday Green Slaughter emptied the
contents of a shotgun into the breast of his cousin, George Slaughter, and
then fired six shots from his revolver at John Holsapple. Slaughter is
mortally wounded and Hosapple seriously hurt. The shooting occurred on the
highway just east of that city and was the result of a quarrel between the
Slaughters over some derogatory remarks alleged to have been made by George
regarding Green's wife. Slaughter surrendered to the authorities and is now
in jail. He says he was assaulted with a hatchet and shot in self defense."
