OWNER OF A FAMOUS MADSTONE
Mrs. Emma J. Summers of Bartholomew County is Dead
Columbus, Ind., June 15-Mrs. Emma J. Summers died last night at Garden City
a few miles south of this city at the home of her mother, Mrs. William
Phipps. She was the widow of the late Dr. Summers, a former prominent
citizen of this county and the Democratic candidate for coroner in 1880.
She was the owner of the celebrated Phipps madstone which has been visited
and used by so many people during the past few years. The stone was found
by her husband during the late war on a battlefield near Lookout Mountain.
It is not yet know into whose possession this valuable healing stone will
now pass.
William Phipps, Mrs. Summer's father, died recently, and his widow is very
old and cannot live long. Thomas Doup, of this city, a son-in-law, is
likely to fall heir to it.
