TENEMENT BLAZE
Apartment House on Vincennes Street Owned by the DePauw Estate
The two-story, frame tenement owned by the Depauw estate on Vincennes Street
and adjoining Jennie DePauw Memorial Church, was badly damaged by fire about
five o'clock last evening.
It is occupied by five families. The fire originated from the middle flue,
which was defective, over Mrs. Annie Wimp's rooms. An alarm was turned in
from box 28 and some officious citizen turned in a second alarm calling out
the entire department. The fire spread to the north end but did not damage
the church. The department confined the flames to the roof and the loss on
the contents was chiefly from water.
The first two apartments, occupied by Charles Calhoun and John Badgett, were
only slightly damaged. The third was occupied by Mrs. Wimp; the fourth was
empty; fifth, Mrs. Martha Seely and sixth by August Easley. The furniture
owned by Mrs. Wimp, Mrs. Seeley and Mr. Easley was considerably damaged by
water.
Mr. and Mrs. Easley were confined to their beds and were carried into a
neighboring house. The loss by fire and water will not be over $1,000 and
is covered by insurance.
